A crazy fact many don’t realize is how much tension pianos carry - around 20-25 tons! That means every string is tightened to ~160-200lbs.
When you multiply this across all 220+ strings in the instrument, it creates a massive combined force.
It explains why tuning is such a tedious process - and it all starts here at the foundry.

A great piano must possess the strength to withstand immense tension — and the sensitivity to transmit the smallest vibration.

Patented on March 31, 1885, C. F. Theodore Steinway’s piano frame design united continuously bent inner and outer rims with carefully arranged braces and reinforced support beneath the keyboard. Its raised, cupola-shaped bass section also created greater space between the metal frame and soundboard, encouraging the fuller development of the instrument’s bass voice.

Patent No. 314,742 reflects the holistic thinking behind every Steinway: structure, touch, and tone conceived as parts of one musical system.
