Most people think you need a boat or head to the pier to catch Spanish mackerel… but that’s not always the case! 🎣

After a few days of rain, the sun is finally back, and so is the opportunity to hook into these speedsters right from the surf. Tyler landed this beautiful Spanish on a live finger mullet, but they’ll also crush a casting jig when they’re feeding.

If you’re already soaking bait and suddenly see fish busting bait in the surf, you’ll be glad you packed the right tackle. Having a Spanish rig and a few casting jigs in your surf bag can turn an ordinary beach day into one you’ll never forget.

Stop by East Coast Sports and we’ll get you set up for whatever the surf throws your way!

Have you ever caught a Spanish from the beach? 👇

There are two kinds of “last casts”…

The ones where nothing happens… and the ones you’ll be talking about for a while. 😂

Yesterday, while making our way back through the marsh behind Topsail Island, I decided to make one last cast with my Nomad Design Tackle USA LiveOps shrimp at the point before heading into open water. I was convinced I’d snagged a log, oysters, or some other structure. But whatever it was… it started moving.

Turns out I’d hooked a BIG flounder that had been perfectly tucked into its ambush spot.

As much as tylergarr20 and I would’ve loved fresh flounder for dinner, North Carolina’s recreational flounder season wasn’t open, so back he went.

While I was reviving him for a healthy release, he absolutely SMACKED the water with his tail and soaked me right in the face. 😂 I’d like to think that was his way of saying, “Next time, leave me alone.”

Sometimes the fish gets the last laugh. 🎣💦

Have you ever had a fish get revenge before?

If you’re wondering about the kayak I’m on, it’s called the Flip-Kat from Noisy River Outdoors, and it’s pretty dang cool 😎

❤️ We’d say this Red Drum was caught with love.

Congratulations to James Stanley on this gorgeous Onslow Beach Red Drum caught from the surf today on a live mullet! As if the fish wasn’t beautiful enough already, check out the heart-shaped spot on its tail. Nature doesn’t make many like that!

They say the spot helps confuse predators… but this one just stole ours. ❤️🎣
