Something to consider.

We have some beautiful trails in DeKalb County and are lucky to have a section of the historic Great Western Trail.

It's interesting that Sycamore's biggest annual event, the Pumpkin Festival, which was founded and celebrated in honor of a cyclist, doesn't currently include any cycling activities.

I have an idea for a community event that could be connected to a charity and help improve that situation. I'm sharing this idea with anyone interested. I'd like to take part, but I don't necessarily want to lead the organization.

Facts: Most local cyclists ride an average of 20 miles or less. To promote more cycling locally, we should create an event that appeals to most local cyclists and their needs while keeping them safe by avoiding roads and major street crossings. We can do this by using our local trail systems.

This is a simple out-and-back route covering a total of 36 miles. The ride goes from the Sycamore Forest Preserve to the Leroy Oaks trailhead and then back to the starting point.

This would provide a good challenge for seasoned cyclists while still being enjoyable for regular riders. To make this idea even more accessible, we could connect some existing inner-city trails and crossings, along with new trail links currently under construction. This would create a shorter route ideal for families, while still offering a longer option.

The main goal is to use our existing resources to keep the project manageable and affordable for the community.

Our local trails are growing for your cycling pleasure. 🚲

A small connection with big impact is almost here!

Beginning the week of August 17 construction will start on the final segment of the Great Western Trail Extension project, completing an integral piece of connectivity in our region's trail system.

During construction, trail users and neighboring businesses and homes may encounter temporary closures, detours, increased construction traffic, and periodic noise. We appreciate your patience as we complete this important investment in Sycamore's future.

Once complete, this trail will connect residents and visitors to existing trail systems, parks, Sycamore Middle School, neighborhoods, and downtown Sycamore.

Sycamore Speedway is hosting a "Back to School" bicycle giveaway. It's a great spot for monster trucks, dirt bikes, and dirt oval racing. Be sure to visit them and consider donating if you can.

Another wonderful aspect of Blue Moon Bikes Ltd is its close location to the Sycamore Forest Preserve and the Great Western Trailhead. This trail section extends from Sycamore to St. Charles, 18 miles one way. You could ride beyond, as you can access the Fox River Trail and connect to either the Elgin or Batavia Spur to reach the Illinois Prairie Path, which leads all the way to Melrose Park.

However, the section from Sycamore to the Durant Farm/Homestead makes for a beautiful scenic ride.
