The Flag Manufacturer’s Association of America (FMAA) proudly celebrates the 243rd birthday of the U.S. flag on flag Day, Sunday, June 14th, 2020, and encourages all Americans to join in the celebration and honor our nation’s great symbol by flying their American flag during National Flag Week.

On June 14, 1777, within a year of achieving independence, the Founding Fathers gave the U.S. its first symbol with the message, “The Flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white, that the Union be 13 stars, white on a blue field representing a new constellation.”

The idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. Bernard J. Cigrand, a school teacher, arranged for his pupils to observe June 14th as the “birthday of the flag”. Cigrand later became a dentist and practiced in our corporate city of Batavia, IL. Dr. Cigrand continued to crusade to have June 14th recognized as a national holiday. In 1894, he and LeRoy VanHorn of Chicago, formed The American Flag Day Association, whose purpose was to conduct exercises in the interest of school children.

Flag Day was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on June 14, 1916, calling for nationwide observance. The week of June 14th is designated at National Flag Week.

While flying the flag is an important part of observing National Flag Week and Flag Day, FMAA (Flag Manufacturers Association of America) wants to ensure that the flags proudly displayed are true symbols of patriotism. When raising Old Glory for all to see, Americans are encouraged to look for the FMAA Certification Seal that ensures the flag is 100% Made in the USA.

Z Flag Store’s journey began way back when, in 1892. Originally named “Balch Bros & West Company”, this family owned business has really stood the test of time. Now named Z Flag Store, our company runs on old fashioned values, loyalty & bringing back the small business!

My name is Jen Zavaglia, and I am the proud owner of Z Flag Store, which has been passed down through many generations, & will hopefully be passed down to my 5 kids someday. My mission is to keep small business values, build relationships with my customers but still stay up with the times & stay competitive. The flag industry has become a very “populated” industry, with overwhelming choices & confusing quality. Here at Z Flag Store, we are committed to the highest quality & competitive pricing. We have survived the saturated industry, all thanks to our wonderful, loyal customers, whom we appreciate so very much!

Z Flag Store is working hard on building a local store front, expanding our business with flag pole installation, repair and maintenance & launching a top of the line, user friendly website.
