I HAVE A BEEF WITH THE DOVELLS(AT LEAST THE SONGWRITERS 🙂
I love the Dovells, have most of their 45s including this one but for some reason I never really listened completely thoroughly to all the lyrics of “Stompin’ Everywhere”. I was running errands today and it played in the car from my phone and they mentioned so many cities all across the country from west coast to east coast, but they didn’t say anything about Seattle or Portland in my native Pacific Northwest.

They mentioned Charlotte, North Carolina, Buffalo, New York as well as many Midwest and East Coast cities, but not Seattle or Portland.

Of course the song came out in 1963 and the group was from Philadelphia so maybe the writers weren’t thinking about including my area in the northwest corner of the country but it’s a good song anyway! Besides, it’s a B side. Of course, just about everyone who was around that time and listened to AM radio remember the big hit they had in “Bristol Stomp” a couple years before that.

BOB LUMAN with a 1976 update cover of his 1956 release “Red Cadillac And Black Mustache”, his first record which was the B side of “All Night Long” on Imperial records.
The Texas born and bred singer also excelled in baseball but did not make the professional level and decided to concentrate on music. He later appeared on the Louisiana Hayride as well.
He had many records in the rockabilly, teen, and country styles but only one charted Billboard hit, “Let’s Think About Livin” in 1960. He later toured in Las Vegas after his stint in the army.
He passed away in Nashville in 1978 at the age of 41.

FOUR GRADUATES with “Candy Queen”, the year was 1964. Led by Bob Miranda and also included Tom Giuliano, Ralph DiVito and David Libert.
The group later changed their name to the Happenings, had hit songs such as “See You In September” in 1966 and “I Got Rhythm in 1967.
The Four Graduates hailed from Paterson, New Jersey, about 15 miles north of Newark and not far from New York City.
Bob Miranda and various personnel as the Happenings continued to perform at oldies shows and cruise ships, even found some dates online as late as last year!

DAN MARLEE with “Candy Lips” on the Constellation label.
1964 teener out of Chicago, his real name was Daniel Albert Marle.
He had several other records later in the 1960’s with harder rock garage band groups, and later started Mid Eagle productions and worked with other musicians such as Ral Donner of the 1961 hit “You Don’t Know What You’ve Got”(Until You Lose It) fame.
Dan passed away young in 1980 but his song with that Four Seasons “Sherry” hint background instrumental style and nice teen vocals lives on with us collectors of that genre.

TEEN DOOWOP FROM THE MOTOR CITY:
Today’s tune features the Octaves out of Detroit, Michigan with their 1958 release, “You’re Too Young”. The group was formed in 1954 by Joe Arcilesi and included Dick Applin, Chuck Mills and Domenic Chiaravalli who also wrote the song. They all attended west side Detroit’s Cooley High and were involved in musical groups at the high school. They had 6 great years together, performed at many west side Detroit sock hops, and I’m glad to share this nice ballad here.
The songwriter Domenic Chiaravalli’s wife’s name was Sharon so I’m thinking he might have written the song about her. I had a good phone conversation with member Joe Arcilesi back in 2009 and he sent me a picture of the group. Domenic passed away young, in 1966 at age 27.

JENNIE LEE LAMBERT with “First Summer Of Our Love”.
Jennie hailed from Syracuse, New York and was married to Motown label writer and producer Mickey Gentile.
One of their daughters Lisa is a singer in her own right.
This 1961 teen ballad fits the era perfectly, before the big changes in music styles about to come in 2-3 years. Her husband Mickey co wrote the song.
Jennie also was an accomplished actress.
