Takoma Bicycle opened on April 1, 2010 to be Takoma Park’s Neighborhood Bike Shop. We fulfill the Takoma Park/Silver Spring/DC community’s need for a bike shop focused on the entry level, recreational rider and commuter. Our shop emphasizes repairs and provides the associated accessories average cyclists need to be safe on the road. Because our mechanics have raced mountain, road, and cyclocross bicycles we can also accommodate the needs of the enthusiast and racer.. Takoma Bicycle was rated One of America’s Best Bike Shops in 2013 and 2014 by the National Bicycle Dealers Association. The store is a business member of the Washington Area Bicycle Association, National Bicycle Dealers Association, League of American Bicyclist, People for Bikes, and Old Takoma Business Association. We team up with the Takoma Park Department of Recreation and DC Public Library to provide bike maintenance workshops. We donate to local schools and organizations in our community to assist in their fundraising efforts. We channel donations of old bikes to the Mount Rainier Bicycle Co-op. We support our local Safe Routes to Schools program by providing repair services and equipment for their bike rodeo program. We support local Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs to help fundraise, and help with bicycle safety and use education as needed to fulfill scouting program requirements. Meet the Business Owner
My name is Bruce Sawtelle. I have been in the bicycle business most of my life. I worked for my Dad's company, Chevy Chase Bicycle Service, since I was a little kid. I love riding all types of bicycles and I raced road and mountain bikes for many years. I was a United States Cycling Federation/USA Cycling race official and organizer. My mission is to get more people on bikes so they can enjoy the benefits of bicycling. I am a skilled mechanic and love repairing bikes for people. The new equipment is amazing, but I also enjoy repairing old bikes too. We have been repairing many, many bikes for Takoma Park and Silver Spring, and D.C residents. Personally, I love the thrill of a bicycle’s speed and agility. Bicycling challenges me on up hills and exhilarates me down them. I love being outside in nature on my bike, it is therapeutic to me. Bicycling improves myself-image, health, and creativity. If you already ride, I want to help make your cycling experience more fun! I look forward to having the opportunity to serve you! I look forward to your comments and suggestions about our store and how it can best serve the community.

Family bicycle safety does not have to begin with a complicated inspection.

Before your next family ride, take a few minutes to look over each bicycle.

Check the tires, squeeze the brakes, make sure the seat and handlebars feel secure, and look for anything obviously loose or unusual. Turn the wheels and pedals and listen for sounds you have not noticed before.

For children, take another look at fit. Kids grow quickly, so a bicycle that fit comfortably earlier in the season may now feel too small or awkward. A child should be able to comfortably control the bicycle, reach the brakes, steer, start, and stop.

During the ride, pay attention if you notice braking that feels different, loose steering, repeated loss of tire pressure, slipping gears, or a new rubbing or grinding sound.

You do not have to know which part is causing the problem. Start by telling us what you see, hear, or feel.

If braking or steering feels unsafe, stop riding. Otherwise, bring the bicycle in for an evaluation when something feels different or you are unsure whether it is ready for regular family riding.

Save this checklist for your next ride together.

Your commuter bicycle does not have to stop working before it deserves attention.

A new sound, softer tire, hesitant gear change, or unfamiliar feeling may be your first sign that something has changed. You do not need to diagnose the problem yourself—just tell us what you hear, feel, or notice.

There are no bad bicycle questions.

An everyday bicycle should feel dependable, whether you use it for commuting, errands, school drop-offs, or family rides.

Pay attention when something begins to feel different:

✓ A tire repeatedly feels soft
✓ The brakes sound or respond differently
✓ The gears hesitate, skip, or slip
✓ The steering feels loose or unfamiliar
✓ The bicycle suddenly takes more effort to ride

You do not need to identify the part or diagnose the problem yourself. Start by describing what you hear, feel, or notice.

Before riding, check the tires, squeeze both brake levers, look for anything visibly loose, and listen while turning the pedals. These simple checks may help you notice when the bicycle needs a closer look.

When braking, steering, or shifting feels unsafe, stop riding and bring the bicycle in for an evaluation. We will explain what we find and discuss the recommended options.

Save this checklist for your next commute or family ride.

The right bicycle repair begins with understanding how you ride.

A worn part or unusual sound may be the reason you visit the shop, but the best next step also depends on where you ride, how often you use the bicycle, and what you need it to do.

When bringing your bicycle in, tell us:

✓ What feels or sounds different
✓ When the issue usually happens
✓ What type of riding you do
✓ What you would like the bicycle to handle more confidently

You do not need to know the correct technical term or diagnose the problem yourself. Start with what you notice. Our team can evaluate the bicycle, explain what we find, and help you understand the available options before approved work begins.

Have a repair, maintenance, part, or accessory question? Visit Takoma Bicycle or call the shop to discuss your needs and confirm current availability.

Your bike is ready. Before leaving the shop, take a minute to understand exactly what was completed.

Ask these three questions at pickup:

✓ What work was completed?
✓ Is there anything I should watch or listen for?
✓ When should I bring the bike back for maintenance?

You do not need to know every technical term. A clear explanation helps you understand what changed, what to expect on your next ride, and when your bicycle may need attention again.

At Takoma Bicycle, we want you to leave the shop feeling informed and confident about your bike.

Have a question about a completed repair? Send us a message or stop by the shop.

Picking up your bicycle should not feel like receiving a bill you do not understand.

When the work is complete, take a moment to review what was repaired, what was adjusted, and anything you should continue to monitor.

A few helpful questions to ask at pickup:

• What work was completed?
• Is there anything I should watch or listen for?
• When should this area be checked again?
• Is there anything I can do between service visits?

You do not need to know the correct technical term. Tell us what you have been hearing, feeling, or noticing, and we will help you understand the next step.

Save this post for your next repair visit.

Takoma Bicycle is closed on Mondays. Visit us at 7216 Carroll Avenue in Takoma Park when the shop reopens. Email us at [email protected]
