Brown Paper Bag (Paper or Plastic) - This painting highlights the brown paper bag and its role in African-American oral history as a discriminatory colorist practice within the African-American community. We can trace the brown paper bag test back to slavery when enslavers kept the lighter-skinned enslaved inside. Today, we are only beginning to reckon with the natural beauty inherent across the color spectrum in all of us.
