Today is National Cowboy Day, and this is one of my favorite pieces of Southwest Florida history. McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers (previously Riverside Drive) used to be part of a cattle trail that ran from North Florida to Punta Rassa, where the foot of the Sanibel Causeway is today. Punta Rassa was one of Florida's primary hubs for shipping cattle to Cuba for most of the 19th century. The road was paved in 1914 and renamed after Ambrose McGregor.

At exactly 9:32am on July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 took off from Cape Kennedy. Its destination? The moon.

More than a million people gathered in the hot Florida summer to witness the event in person, while millions more watched on television around the world.

Within a few days, the crew of Apollo 11 would make one giant leap for mankind.

🚀 Experience this thrilling moment in an encore presentation of CHASING THE MOON, airing Fridays July 24, July 31, and August 7 a 9/8c on PBS (check local listings).
