Shrewsbury Cakes.

Shrewsbury Cakes are a traditional English biscuit (cookie) originating in Shrewsbury, England. Early recipes are typically flavored with spices such as mace. Mace is a delicate, aromatic outer covering of the nutmeg seed — which was a popular flavoring in early British baking —- giving them a distinctive character.

They also appear in American Cookery (1796) by Amelia Simmons, America’s first published cookbook, reflecting the influence of British baking traditions on early American kitchens.

Today’s A Revolutionary Tea at Lyndhurst Mansion & Gardens combined historic sweets, light storytelling, and themed parlor games in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary.

At its conclusion, a Declaration of Indulgence (!) was read with the understanding that tea, sugar and sweets should be enjoyed with no restrictions! 😆

The historic sweets reflected British and American fare: 🇬🇧 seed cake (with caraway seeds)
🇺🇸 molasses (ginger) cookies (as molasses was often used as an alternate to sugar) and
🇺🇸 cider cake (as apples and cider were common ingredients used).

Teas:🫖 Rose black tea and peach herbal tea

For a few lovely hours, time seemed to slow, inviting guests to savor history one cup of tea at a time.

Today’s Gilded Age Tea Experience at the Biddle Mansion at Tarrytown House Estate offered an afternoon tea celebrating the elegance of a bygone age in an extraordinary setting - and with wonderful guests!
