During the Victorian era, crowded places were subject to foul smells, such as body perspiration, to***co smoke, poor ventilation, and proximity to barn animals.
Heavy wool and silk outer garments were rarely washed, instead, they were brushed and aired out regularly.
Full-body baths were infrequent, leading upper class people to manage odors with scented powders and perfumes rather than daily washing.
Perfume pendants, like the ones shown, worn on chains contained ammonia-based concoctions and aromatic herbs like lavender and mint. One sniff would mask the unbearable stench of the 19th Century. Maybe!
