Andrés Montoya’s poetry has influenced many contemporary Chicano writers––one of them is the award-winning poet Anthony Cody. During an undergraduate class with Juan Felipe Herrera, the renowned professor and poet introduced Cody to THE ICE WORKER SINGS AND OTHER POEMS, published in 1999 by the Bilingual Press | Editorial Bilingüe.

Cody saw himself on the pages of this poetry collection and was inspired to experiment with his own work. Today, Cody honors Montoya’s legacy by supporting emerging poets through the Andrés Montoya Prize.
