Back from SDCC, it’s once again time for our favorite weekly tradition, new comic book day! This is the last week of releases for July, and also a fifth Wednesday of new releases this month, so you’ll see some annuals, and odds and ends to pad the release schedule for this extra week.

I hope to have a post up with some of the exclusives we brought back from SDCC that will be making their way to the wall in-store. Stay tuned, and read more comics!

Summer is in full effect, and, thankfully, we’ve got a cool shop for you to come in, browse, take a break from the heat, and leave with a different kind of heat: comic books! Our doors are open until 7 PM today, 11-7 tomorrow, and 11-5 on Sunday; so swing on by to wrap your week with some good reads.

Thanks to everyone who came out last week for our signing with Ryan Cody ( Ryan Cody ) and Scott Godlewski for the Ash Avenue Comics stop on Ryan’s Old Man Thunderpunch Summer Tour. It was great to see fans of their respective work roll through to get their copies of Old Man Thunderpunch signed by Ryan, and to give our regular weekend customers a chance to meet Ryan and Scott and get some comics signed. Scott Godlewski is the artist on DC’s monthly title, Adventures of Superman: Book of Kal-El, and has a good list of titles recently published by the Big Two, including Justice League vs Legion of Superheroes (with Ryan Cody on colors), Ms Marvel: Mutant Menace, and Spider-Society. The Illustrious Gentlemen were kind enough to leave a couple of fantastic sketch cards with us, Scott’s Absolute Batman, and Ryan’s Old Man Thunderpunch; we also have some signed copies of Old Man Thunderpunch out on the racks and signed by Ryan.

One of the best bits took place after the signing as Ryan was doing some shopping and came across a copy of the Amazing Joy Bizzards trade paperback. Joy Buzzards was a comic book mini-series from writer Mark Andrew Smith and artist Dan Hipp, published in a trade paperback collection by Image Comics in 2005. It’s also where Ryan Cody had his first professionally published comic work with a pinup for the series. Check that third slide out for a look at Ryan’s early work (and that mysterious third hand pointing it out).

It’s new comic book day, so here’s our look back at the week that was in comic book sales at Ash Avenue Comics. As always, we stack up our sales in the shop, and then compare our top sellers to a selection of sales from the industry at large. Comic news site Bleeding Cool runs a weekly article that captures sales data from the hundreds of brick and mortar comic book shops that use the ComicHub point of sale system, of which we are one such store, and we occasionally share how our customers buying habits stack up against the larger sales trends in comics.

There’s not a lot of head turning disparities this week, other than the third issue of the never before published Swamp Thing 1989 #3 making it to the sixth spot on our top 10. What’s more remarkable, is that we were shorted a stack of our copies by our distributor, so it seems likely that this one could have ranked in the 5th spot, without problem, had all of our copies arrived. Of note: the swan song of Marvel’s Ultimate line hit the shelves with some customer and reader enthusiasm, but with a decidedly different exit than entry.

There’s a huge slate of new titles out this week, so swing by the shop to grab some good reads to start July off right.

This Saturday, come through the shop for a mid-day signing with Ryan Cody and special guest Scott Godlewski from noon to 3 PM. Ryan is running through the dates on his Old Man Thunderpunch summer tour, and Ash Ave Comics is the next stop, this Saturday. Ryan and Scott will have comics, prints, and original art available; and bring your copies of Scott’s recent work on Adventures of Superman: Book of El, Spider-Society, Ms Marvel: Mutant Menace, or anything else you’d like to get signed. It’s new comic book day, but often overlooked are the new graphic novels, and trade paperback collections hitting the shelves. Here’s some of the latest releases to make it to our racks for your reading pleasure. We open at 10 AM and close at 7 PM today, so check some of these titles out to add to your stack of new releases (which include the latest issues of little known titles like Absolute Batman and Absolute Green Arrow). The kids and young adult section has moved to the front of the shop! Gone are the days of the boxpocalypse from the last two years of doing constant comic cons and shows, and in its place are our two young readers bookcases with room for a third bookcase to be added this summer. And what is taking the place from where we moved these shelves? We have added two more bookcases to our manga section, making it a total of five bookcases to expand and diversify our selection of Japanese comic books. And they’re already fully stocked! We are excited to better utilize our floor space to offer an even deeper and varied selection of titles for you to browse at the shop. Drop by the shop today for new comics, or swing by any time later this week to check it out for yourself.

Not making it to Fan Fusion this weekend? No problem, just swing by the shop for some of this week’s new releases and make it your own mini-con. We are open 11-5 on Sunday, so come by the shop to cool down, and flip through some of the best comic books on the shelves.
