A good night outside starts with a camp set up the right way.

Find level ground. Get the tent up before the light disappears. Keep your dry layers and headlamp where you can reach them. Then take a minute to gather what you need for the fire.

Start small. Dry tinder first. Kindling next. Let the first flame earn its place before adding the bigger wood.

There is no need to rush it.

By the time the fire settles into a steady glow, camp is ready, dinner has a place to cook, and the day finally starts to slow down.

A tarp keeps rain off your hammock.

A drip line helps keep rain out of it.

When it rains, water can travel down your suspension straps and follow that path straight toward your hammock. A simple piece of cord tied around each suspension line gives the water somewhere else to go.

It catches the runoff before it reaches your sleep system and sends it to the ground instead.

Two small pieces of cord. A dry hammock. A much better night outside.

Set your tarp. Add your drip lines. Sleep easier when the weather turns.

A stubborn tent stake does not need a wrestling match.

Take a second stake and hook it beneath the first stake’s head or guyline loop. Use it as a handle, then pull straight up while gently rocking the stake side to side.

More control. Less bent gear. No torn-up campsite.

Starting a campfire is not about making the biggest flame in the first thirty seconds.
It is about doing the small things right.

Start with dry tinder. Build with kindling. Give the fire room to breathe. Add larger wood only after the first flame has earned its place.

And before any of that, make getting your firewood to camp easier.
