Lost somewhere in cutthroat heaven...

🏔️🎣This absolute beauty slammed a streamer on one of our favorite Wyoming tailwaters this week!

🌡️We’ve been blessed with a nice cool down with plenty of rain and nighttime temps dropping into the 50’s across the state which is badly needed. Looks like a little warm up over the next couple of days, but then it gets cooler again. Hopefully the heat of the summer is behind us and our water temps will continue to drop.

Just a quick heads up that the Big Horn river is blown out. Feeder creeks from both sides are turning the river off color. It is clear until Buffalo Creek Road on one side. The other side is blown out. Once you get below Buffalo Creek Road the entire river is muddy.

With the Wyoming Game and Fish voluntary 12pm closure of the Big Horn River in Thermopolis, we are calling off trips until water temps drop to protect this great resource. Fortunately we have permits to fish the Wind & Green tailwaters and small mountain creeks like this one in our area full of willing Yellowstone trout. If you’ll be in the area and want to go fly fishing, give us a call, it’ll be an experience you’ll never forget! 1-307-864-3499

Here's an exciting article from our Wyoming Game and Fish about Helicopter stocked lakes around Dubois and Lander. As it says, it will take a few years for these fish to grow to catchable size, but these are definitely places to put on your list come 2028 and beyond! We do have permits to guide on several lakes in the Lander area, if you are interested in learning more hit us up!

🌡️ PLEASE WATCH WATER TEMPERATURES WHEN TROUT FISHING

We recently checked the water temperature coming out of the dam on the Wind River and received readings of 66°F and 67°F.

The Wind River becomes the Bighorn River at the Wedding of the Waters near Thermopolis, so these temperatures are important for anglers fishing the river downstream.

Trout are cold-water fish. As water temperatures rise, the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water decreases. This makes it much harder for a trout to recover from the stress of being hooked, fought and released.

At 66–67°F, we are already entering the caution zone. Many fisheries and conservation organizations recommend stopping catch-and-release trout fishing when water temperatures reach 68°F. Wyoming Game and Fish advises anglers not to release trout once the water reaches 70°F.

Here are a few ways we can help protect the fishery:

🎣 Fish early in the morning when the water is coolest.

🌡️ Carry a stream thermometer and check the temperature regularly.

⏱️ Use appropriate tackle and land fish as quickly as possible.

💧 Keep the fish in the water, wet your hands and avoid lengthy photographs.

🚫 When the temperature reaches 68°F, please consider giving the trout a break.

This is not about criticizing anyone for fishing. It is about educating ourselves and protecting the trout that make the Wind River and Bighorn River such special fisheries.

A trout may swim away after being released, but that does not always mean it survives. A little restraint during the hottest part of summer can help ensure that these fish are still here for all of us in the future.

Please share this information with other anglers and help us protect the resource.

Most fly shops in Wyoming hang their hat on trout — and we love trout as much as anybody.

But around here, we’re not a one-trick pony.

Thermopolis Fly Shop offers guided fishing opportunities on permitted waters that hold big walleye, lake trout, kokanee, bass, panfish, and more — including Boysen State Park on the Wind River, Buffalo Bill Reservoir and the Shoshone, Fontenelle Reservoir, and the Green River.

So if you want to mix it up this summer, give us a call.

Big water. Big fish. Wyoming style.

We heard the dam work on the first generator was completed and 100% of the flow was again coming from below the dam…here is confirmation. Great news as we were worried about water temps going into the summer. Bugs are hatchin, pmd’s, yellow sallies, caddis, cicadas and more! We’re having some nice weather and the boat traffic is much lower now, great time to plan a trip.

🎣 New to Fly Fishing? Here Are the Basics

Fly fishing can look complicated at first, but the idea is simple: you are using a lightweight artificial fly to imitate the bugs and baitfish trout naturally eat.

Unlike regular fishing, the fly itself is almost weightless. The weight of the fly line is what helps you cast. With a little practice, you learn to place the fly gently on the water and let it drift naturally with the current.

A few basic things every beginner should know:

✅ **The fly rod and line work together**
You are not casting a heavy lure. You are casting the line, and the fly follows.

✅ **Presentation matters**
Trout are usually looking for a natural drift. If your fly moves like real food, you have a much better chance.

✅ **You do not need a huge box of flies**
A few good dry flies, nymphs, and streamers can get you started.

✅ **Reading the water is part of the fun**
Trout often hold near seams, riffles, undercut banks, deeper runs, and places where food naturally comes to them.

✅ **Practice makes a big difference**
Even a few minutes of casting practice can make your day on the river much more enjoyable.

Fly fishing is not just about catching fish. It is about slowing down, watching the water, learning the river, and enjoying time outside.

Whether you are brand new or just getting back into it, stop by the shop and we’ll help you get pointed in the right direction. We can help with flies, gear, local advice, and tips for fishing the Thermopolis area and the Big Horn River.

See you on the water! 🎣
