Why do gardeners use rice hulls? 🌾

Rice hulls are a natural way to improve soil structure in raised beds, containers, seed-starting mixes, and garden blends.

They help create more air space in the soil, which matters because healthy roots need oxygen, drainage, and room to grow β€” not just water and nutrients.

Rice hulls can help:

🌱 Improve aeration
🌱 Support drainage
🌱 Reduce compaction
🌱 Keep soil mixes lighter and easier to work with
🌱 Add organic structure as they slowly break down

They are especially useful for raised beds, containers, seed starting, soil blocking, and custom soil blends where structure and airflow matter.

At Summer Creek Farm, we use rice hulls as part of our approach to building healthy, practical growing mixes. Good soil is not just about nutrients β€” it is also about structure, moisture, airflow, and root movement.

We currently have rice hull bales available for pickup at Summer Creek Farm in Thurmont.

Garden not taking off? It might be your soil. 🌱

If your plants are looking smaller, weaker, paler, or slower than expected, your garden may need a soil refresh.

When soil loses structure, drains poorly, compacts, or runs out of nutrients, plants can struggle to grow their best β€” even when you are watering, weeding, and doing everything else right.

A fresh top-off with quality organic raised bed mix can help improve the planting zone and give your plants a stronger foundation for the rest of the season.

Our AMO Organic Raised Bed Mix is available now for pickup at Summer Creek Farm in Thurmont.

Use it to:

🌱 Refresh tired raised beds
🌱 Top off settled soil
🌱 Improve the planting zone
🌱 Support stronger root growth
🌱 Help struggling plants get back on track

Not sure how much you need? Send us your bed size and what you are growing. We can help estimate bags or bulk volume before you make the trip.

Pickup available at Summer Creek Farm in Thurmont. Local delivery may be available depending on volume and location.

Never a dull day on the farm. 🐝

Rick spotted a honeybee swarm and got to work guiding it safely back to the hive.

Swarming is a natural part of honeybee life β€” it’s how a healthy colony grows, reorganizes, and looks for a new home. When handled carefully, the bees can be redirected without panic, drama, or turning the whole thing into a tiny airborne rodeo.

Healthy soil, healthy plants, healthy pollinators β€” it’s all connected.

Just another day at Summer Creek Farm.

Not sure how much soil your raised bed needs? We can help. 🌱

One of the most common questions we get is:
β€œHow many bags do I need?”

The good news: you do not have to guess.

For a full fill, the basic formula is:

Length Γ— Width Γ— Depth = cubic feet

For example, a 4 ft Γ— 8 ft raised bed filled 12 inches deep needs about 32 cubic feet of soil.

If you are only topping off an existing bed, refreshing tired soil, or adding a few inches before planting, you may need much less.

We have organic raised bed mix available for pickup at Summer Creek Farm in Thurmont, and we are happy to help estimate what you need before you make the trip.

To get a quick estimate, send us:

🌱 Bed length
🌱 Bed width
🌱 Fill depth or top-off depth
🌱 Number of beds

We’ll help you figure out bags or bulk volume.

Healthy plants start with healthy soil β€” and guessing is optional.
