UPAVIM Crafts UPAVIM Crafts is part of UPAVIM - A Guatemalan Women's Organization united in their fight for a bett When you empower women, you grow a community.

UPAVIM exports beautiful Fair Trade handmade gifts & crafts all around the world. Your Fair Trade gift & crafts' purchases directly support community educational and medical programs. UPAVIM has also started additional small businesses, including a bakery and soy milk factory. International donors, many of them crafts customers, continue to fund scholarships for more than 430 elementary and junior

high school students. All of these projects are overseen by the Guatemalan all women volunteer-run UPAVIM board of directors and the 5 program committees. At UPAVIM, the women as members have control over their community services and business decisions. UPAVIM also distributes Fair Trade products made by a number of groups in rural areas of Guatemala and buys their traditional cotton cloth directly from weaving families and weaving cooperatives. This cuts out middlemen and creates a chain of fair wages and fair prices - from the weaver, to the seamstress, to the customer. If you spend much time at the UPAVIM craft center or school, it’s inevitable Barb’s name will come up. In many ways she’s the matriarch of our community—abuela to all, mentor, friend, and tireless supporter of UPAVIM for more than 35 years.

UPAVIM is what it is today because of the work of many women coming together with a shared vision. Barb was one of the early believers who brought the grit, connections, and determination to turn that vision into something lasting.

On Sept 6, Barb turns 90! 🎂 To celebrate, the UPAVIM Community Development Foundation is raising funds for the UPAVIM school—helping supplement teacher salaries, purchase educational materials, provide student scholarships, and support art and music programs.

Si pasas mucho tiempo en el centro de artesanías o en la escuela de UPAVIM, es inevitable que el nombre de Barb salga en la conversación. En muchos sentidos, ella es la matriarca de nuestra comunidad: abuela de todos, mentora, amiga y una incansable defensora de UPAVIM durante más de 35 años.

Either way- he’s the sweetest desk accessory of the season. 🐢🌈 Each mug warmer is fair trade certified with a woven cotton exterior filled with rice, cinnamon, and cloves, made by the UPAVIM women’s cooperative in Guatemala City. ❤️
