UPAVIM Crafts UPAVIM Crafts is part of UPAVIM - A Guatemalan Women's Organization united in their fight for a bett When you empower women, you grow a community.

UPAVIM exports beautiful Fair Trade handmade gifts & crafts all around the world. Your Fair Trade gift & crafts' purchases directly support community educational and medical programs. UPAVIM has also started additional small businesses, including a bakery and soy milk factory. International donors, many of them crafts customers, continue to fund scholarships for more than 430 elementary and junior

high school students. All of these projects are overseen by the Guatemalan all women volunteer-run UPAVIM board of directors and the 5 program committees. At UPAVIM, the women as members have control over their community services and business decisions. UPAVIM also distributes Fair Trade products made by a number of groups in rural areas of Guatemala and buys their traditional cotton cloth directly from weaving families and weaving cooperatives. This cuts out middlemen and creates a chain of fair wages and fair prices - from the weaver, to the seamstress, to the customer. We invite you to take a look around our website and enjoy the beauty of the crafts these women/artisans have created. Please know that every purchase makes a difference and greatly enhances the quality of life for these women, their families and their community through the numerous programs, schools & services run by UPAVIM.

While the UNESCO World Heritage Center recognizes Antigua as a Spanish colonial masterpiece, indigenous Mayans often view it as a site of historical subjugation that is now surrounded by resilient, traditional villages. 🌺
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To learn from Indigenous communities around Antigua, visit nearby Kaqchikel villages like San Antonio Aguas Calientes for weaving, take cultural walking tours focusing on local markets and history, or take a day trip to the Lake Atitlán region for deeper immersion with Tz’utujil Maya.

Production Director Sonia is all smiles with her small granddaughter by her side. 💛 As an intergenerational community of mothers and grandmothers, Mother’s Day is a special time to feel gratitude for those who have come alongside and guided our way.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mother’s Day can also be a difficult time of remembering loved one’s lost- both children and parents- particularly here, on the streets of La Esperanza. Today we hold space for those still with us and those who have passed on. From the UPAVIM team, you’re in our thoughts.

Building by hand takes time, patience, consistency, and skill. In a digital world we appreciate slowing down and recognizing handmade objects for the history and presence they bring.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shop UPAVIM’s handmade collection and support not only artisanal makers, but also the extended UPAVIM community and school.

Construir a mano requiere tiempo, paciencia, constancia y habilidad.

Indigenous rights activist Rigoberta Menchú Tum is a prominent figure in Guatemalan social justice who received the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize for her work highlighting indigenous struggles and advocating for social justice during the Guatemalan Civil War.

She encourages, "Struggles for the rights of poor people, for dignity, for human life, seem to be very, very dark tunnels, but one should always try, in that struggle, to find some light and some hope".
--
