Why is the trail under water sometimes?

Low-lying parts of the Great Miami River Recreation Trail can become submerged by rising river levels following heavy rains. Much of the trail is built on or along Miami Conservancy District - MCD levees that keep the Great Miami River from flooding riverfront cities from Piqua to Hamilton.

It’s always a good idea to check trail conditions before you go—especially after it rains. We have a live trail conditions map on our website that utilizes sensors to indicate if sections of the Great Miami River Rec Trail are submerged.

Trip planning for your 2026 adventure has new tools: updated printed trail guides with additional features and an updated all in one post with direct links to the info on our website.

Quick tips for planning:
For first timers, northbound is better because the transition to the Towpath is easier.

Be familiar with the local name of each trail section.

Plan for variable temperatures and weather conditions.

Watch YouTube videos to learn from others' experiences.

Yes there is an end to end shuttle and a luggage shuttle, each service is a different business.

Don't over plan because you may need to be flexible, be familiar with the resources so you can change distance if needed. (ie Trees down, high water, erosion and short term construction).

And of course, enjoy your adventure!
