Very excited to announce our first of what we hope will be ANNUAL Old Newsboys/Toledo Firefighters Local 92 Charities Pancake Breakfast!! Plan on playing hookey from work for a little bit on Friday, October 2nd from 8-11 at the Local 92 Union Hall and support the Newsboys!!

This Day in Toledo History: August 16, 1915

John Gunckel, the father of the “Toledo Newsboys,” and the National Newsboys, dies at his Toledo home after a long illness. Gunckel , or “Gunk” as he was known, founded the newsboys after taking notice of the many young and homeless boys who sold newspapers on the streets. Many of then living desperate lives, he began working with them to form an organization and mentored them with education and self improvement. Gunk was able to get other local business owners to help him on his mission with the boys and they raised enough money to finance their own building in downtown Toledo. Gunckel himself would become head of the National Newsboys Association as chapters were started throughout the United States. His grave site at Woodlawn Cemetery is marked by a tall pyramid of stones
