On this day in 1976, Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled LP made it to #1 on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart (September 4)

It’s the legendary band's second self-titled LP after their 1968 debut album…

After a sluggish start, and a very slow climb, the 1975 album peaked in the #1 spot in the US a staggering 58 weeks after entering the charts, on the back of relentless touring.

In an interview with Uncut, Stevie Nicks said of the album: "We just played everywhere and we sold that record. We kicked that album in the ass."

The record also spawned three top twenty singles: "Over My Head", "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me", the last two falling just short of the Top 10, both at #11.

It was also the first Fleetwood Mac LP featuring Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks (which was a recruiting masterstroke), after Bob Welch departed the band in late 1974.

The album contained songs of theirs like “Rhiannon”, "I'm So Afraid", and "Monday Morning" that were written by Nicks and Buckingham before they joined the band, and were initially slated to appear on a second Buckingham Nicks album.

The song “Crystal" was recycled from the first Buckingham Nicks album, but with a different arrangement.

In 2003, “Fleetwood Mac” was ranked #182 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time", maintaining the rating in a 2012 revised list.

The classic album also went to #2 in Canada, #3 in Australia and Norway, and #4 in New Zealand.

In the UK, the album initially did not enter the charts and made its debut at #49 on the UK Albums Chart dated 6 November 1976, well over a year after the album's release.
It peaked at #23 its second week on the chart.

On this day in 1968, the Doors single “Hello, I Love You” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #41 (September 3)

The song is credited to the Doors, but has also been the subject of plagiarism controversy over the years.

Guitarist Robbie Krieger said the song's drum beat was taken from Cream's song "Sunshine of Your Love". But The Kinks’ Ray Davies commented in a 2012 interview with Mojo magazine:

The funniest thing was when my publisher came to me on tour and said the Doors had used the riff for "All Day and All of the Night" for "Hello, I Love You".
I said rather than sue them, can we just get them to own up?
My publisher said, "They have, that’s why we should sue them!" (laughs)
Jim Morrison admitted it, which to me was the most important thing.
The most important thing, actually, is to take (the idea) somewhere else.”

In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, Davies suggested that an out-of-court settlement had been reached with the Doors.
Keyboardist Ray Manzarek, admitted in an interview with Musician magazine that it was "a lot like a Kinks song."

According to Songfacts:

Jim Morrison wrote this in 1965 after seeing a beautiful woman walking on the beach. He wrote these lyrics in this notebook:

“Sidewalk crouches at her feet
Like a dog that begs for something sweet”

He wrote the rest of the song that night, crafting the most popular song about beachside beauty since "The Girl From Ipanema."

He also popularized a pickup line - "Hello, I love you. Won't you tell me your name?" - that has yet to work for anyone but Jim Morrison.

It spent two weeks at #1 in the US, and also topped the charts in Canada.

This was the first Doors song that was successful in Europe, reaching #10 in Switzerland, #14 in the Netherlands, and #15 in the UK.

The song also peaked at #11 in South Africa, and #12 in New Zealand.

Singer-songwriter Al Stewart was born Alastair Ian Stewart in Glasgow, Scotland, on this day in 1945 (September 5)

Stewart is best known for his 1976 hit single "Year of the Cat", from the platinum album of the same name.

Though “Year of the Cat” and its 1978 platinum follow-up “Time Passages” brought Stewart his biggest worldwide commercial successes, earlier albums such as “Past, Present and Future” from 1973 are often seen as better examples of his intimate brand of historical folk-rock, a style to which he returned in later albums.

Al played at the first-ever Glastonbury Festival in 1970, knew Yoko Ono before she met John Lennon, and shared a London flat with a young Paul Simon.

In the mid 1960’s, a young Stewart was playing in London, recalling in an interview with the Santa Barbara Independent:

“I think I made about three pounds — which is $6 — a night playing at Bunjies Coffee House. Van Morrison played there, Paul Simon played there — pretty much everyone played there.

I was 19…….It just happened by coincidence that I found myself living in the next room to Paul Simon.
I was there when he wrote some of those early songs … and he did indeed come out and play them to me … because if you’re a songwriter, as soon as you’ve written a new song you want someone to hear it.

So I got to hear a lot of those songs from that period of time.”

Jimmy Page worked as a session musician on Al Stewart’s second album “Love Chronicles”, and a few years down the track was sounding him out for a spot in the soon-to-be-formed Led Zeppelin, recalling that after the Yardbirds broke up, Page said:

“‘I’m forming a band, and we’re looking for a bass player.’
What I probably should have said is: “How hard is it to play the bass, and what’s [the band] going to be called?”

At the time, I was so deep into the folk scene I just said, “Oh, well, good luck with that.” It would have been a very long shot … but he was looking at me very meaningfully when he said that.

And I guess he hadn’t got John Paul Jones onboard at that point. So, perhaps I could have had a slightly different career if I’d have paid more attention…”

Anyway, we’re pretty happy with how it all turned out for both of them!

And where did the lyrics for “Year of the Cat” come from? Stewart offered:

“I have no idea, man. … I had a girlfriend at the time who had a book on Vietnamese astrology, and it was opened at that chapter. So, I look at the chapter heading, and it says: “Year of the Cat.”
I don’t know very much about a whole lot of things, but I do know a song title when I see one.

That one just jumped off the page at me!”

On this day in 1970, Eric Clapton’s debut, solo self-titled LP “Eric Clapton” debuted on the UK Albums Chart at #17 (September 5)

Clapton released his debut solo studio album after stints a number of legendary bands including The Yardbirds, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Cream and Blind Faith.

In an interview from 2006, Clapton recalled that he was very happy making this album and was pleased with the results of the recording sessions, but also noted that "the only thing [he] didn't like about the album is [his] voice", because it sounds so "high" and "young", which Clapton disliked, because he "always wanted to sound like an old guy".

Among the plethora of excellent contributors to the album were Stephen Stills (guitars, bass, and backing vocals), Leon Russell (piano) and Rita Coolidge (backing vocals)

The album peaked at #7 in Australia, #13 in the US, #14 in the UK, and #17 in Norway.

On this day in 1977, the Blondie single “In The Flesh” debuted on the Australian charts at #99 (September 5)

Interestingly, this was Blondie’s first world commercial success, which started when “Countdown” mistakenly played their video "In the Flesh", which was the B-side of their current single "X-Offender".

When “In The Flesh” eventually reached #2 on the charts in November 1977 in its own right, Australia became the first territory in which Blondie achieved a hit single.

In Ian Meldrum's 2014 autobiography, Debbie Harry elaborated saying "We met Ian in 1977... he asked if we had any videos [and] we gave him videos for "X Offender" and "In the Flesh".

On Countdown, they were meant to play "X Offender", but they played "In the Flesh" instead. So our success in Australia was one big mistake."

Keyboard player Jimmy Destri later said “we still thank him to this day" for playing the wrong song.

In a 1998 interview, drummer Clem Burke recalled seeing the episode in which the wrong song was played, but he and Chris Stein suggested that it actually may have been a deliberate subterfuge on the part of Molly...

This week in 1969, the movie “Easy Rider” premiered in the UK (September 4)

“Easy Rider” is an American independent road drama film written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern, produced by Fonda, and directed by Hopper.
Fonda and Hopper play two bikers who travel through the American Southwest and South, carrying the proceeds from a co***ne deal.

The iconic counterculture film explores the societal landscape, issues, and tensions towards adolescents in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise of the hippie movement, drug use, and communal lifestyle.

The movie's soundtrack featured major rock artists including The Band, The Byrds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Steppenwolf.
Editor Donn Cambern used various music from his own record collection to make watching hours of bike footage more interesting during editing, and most of Cambern's music was used, with licensing costs of $1 million, triple the film's budget.

Interestingly, the original plan was that Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were going to write a totally original soundtrack, but after the temporary songs were put in, they fit so well that the producers decided to go with that, and go get the rights to use those songs! And CSNY reportedly agreed that they couldn’t have improved on it…
