On this day in 1971, the single “The Witch Queen of New Orleans” peaked on the UK Singles Chart at #2 (October 23)

All members of Redbone during their commercial peak were of Mexican American and Native American heritage, which was reflected in their songs, stage costumes, and album art.

"The Witch Queen of New Orleans" is about a 19th-century practitioner of voodoo from New Orleans named Marie Laveau, referred to in the song lyrics as "Marie la Voodoo veau".

The song was written by Native American brothers of Redbone, Lolly Vegas and Pat Vegas.

The song went all the way to #1 in Belgium, #2 in the UK (behind Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May”), #5 in the Netherlands, #6 in Norway, #7 in Ireland, #13 in Germany, #15 in Canada, #17 in Australia, #21 in the US, and #23 in France.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Leslie West! 🤘

Remembering Leslie West, who would have been 81 years old today. As the legendary guitarist and vocalist of Mountain, he helped shape the sound of hard rock with his powerful guitar riffs and unmistakable voice.

His band’s most famous song, “Mississippi Queen,” remains a timeless rock anthem and one of the defining songs of the early 1970s.

Leslie West passed away at the age of 75, following cardiac arrest. His incredible guitar work and contribution to rock music will never be forgotten.

Rest in power, Leslie West. Your music will rock on forever! 🖤🤘

With a career spanning more than six decades, Elvin has become one of the most respected guitarists in American blues and rock music.

From his early years with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band to his successful solo career, Elvin helped bring blues music to generations of listeners.

His unforgettable 1976 hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” became a timeless classic, while songs like “Travelin' Shoes” and “Struttin' My Stuff” showcased his distinctive guitar playing and musical personality.

His remarkable contributions to blues and rock earned him recognition in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame.

More than five decades after his breakthrough, his music continues to connect with fans around the world.

Meat Loaf released Bat Out of Hell 49 years ago today, on October 21, 1977. Every song came from Jim Steinman, much of it out of Neverland, his rock-opera take on Peter Pan, and the two spent years getting turned down by label after label. Todd Rundgren produced it, played the guitars and all but paid for it himself, with Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg from the E Street Band, Ellen Foley on Paradise by the Dashboard Light and Phil Rizzuto calling the play-by-play. It only reached No. 14 in America, but it went on to sell tens of millions of copies and spent more than 500 weeks on the UK chart.
