From its beginnings in Iran, Catalina Rug has been in the rug business for three generations. The US store was launched in 1999 in a small front store in Redondo Beach, a beach city in Southern California. It is operated by the owners Jeff Shadkam and Rose Shadkam. Jeff Shadkam is the 3rd generation in his family to be in the rug business and has over 35 years of experience. Rose has over 17 years

of experience and loves helping customers with choosing the perfect rug for their home. Always striving to improve our customers’ experience, we were one of the first rug stores to go online. The company expanded quickly and is now a worldwide online rug store. Catalina Rug currently operates out of a large warehouse in the city of Torrance in sunny Southern California.

Some rugs carry a signature. This one carries a name that changed a city. 🧶

Woven into this Kashan is the mark of Haji Mollah Mohammad Hassan Mohtasham — the weaver whose workshop, in the late 1800s, is generally credited with restoring Kashan to the front rank of Persian weaving after a long decline. "Mohtasham Kashan" stopped being a maker's name and became a category. Collectors still use it that way.

The rug itself is small and dense: 4'4" x 6'9", silk and wool pile at roughly 256 knots per square inch, a deep red field carrying fine floral work with a green border holding it in. The silk isn't there for shine alone — it's used selectively, so certain motifs catch light while the wool around them stays matte. That contrast is a Mohtasham habit.

In the holy city of Qum, weavers are making what many consider the most luxurious rugs on the planet. ✨

Three things set them apart:

They're made entirely of silk. Where most Persian rugs rely on wool, Qum master weavers use ultra-fine natural silk for both the pile and the foundation — which gives the rug a jewel-like shimmer that shifts color depending on where you stand in the room.

The detail is almost unreasonable. Because silk is so impossibly thin, these rugs reach up to 700 knots per square inch — fine enough to draw the wrinkles on a face or the feathers on a bird.

1. Stick to wool — naturally resilient, soil-resistant, and packed with lanolin that repels liquid. Save the delicate silks for pet-free rooms.
2. Keep the pile low — traps less hair, vacuums in seconds, and resists claw damage far better than a plush pile.
3. Embrace the chaos — busy, multicolored designs like Heriz, Bakhtiari, Qashqai and some Tabriz hide hair and small accidents beautifully.
4. Use a quality rug pad to block moisture. If an accident happens: blot, never rub.
5. Vacuum weekly on suction only — no spinning brush roll.

Most people ignore their rug's fringe entirely. That's a mistake — those tassels are the continuation of the internal warp threads holding the whole masterpiece together. If the fringe unravels, the rug follows. 🧶

Three steps to keep it right:

1. Never vacuum the fringe. A rotating brush roll grabs, tears and shreds those threads over time. Suction only, or sweep gently with a broom.
2. Brush them gently. A soft comb or wide toothbrush keeps wool and silk fringes from tangling and matting.
3. Wash them safely. Slip a wooden stick or flat board underneath, dip a soft brush in heavily diluted bleach-free dish soap, and brush lightly from the rug outward. Let them dry fully before turning to the other side.

Never harsh chemicals, never bleach — you'll rot the foundation.

Look closely at this field and you'll find a fish. 🧶

The pattern is called Herati, and it's one of the oldest repeating designs in Persian weaving. The unit is simple: a rosette at the centre, enclosed in a diamond, with four curved leaves arcing around it. Those leaves are the reason Persian weavers call it mahi — fish. Once you see them swimming around each flower, you can't unsee it.

What makes Herati hard is that it never stops. There's no medallion to rest the eye or hide a shift; the repeat runs edge to edge across ten by thirteen feet, and any drift in the rhythm shows immediately. This one holds its line at roughly 324 knots per square inch across the whole field, in muted plum and indigo with ivory tracing the shapes.

Knots per square inch is the number everyone quotes — and the one most people misread. 🧶

Here's the secret: higher isn't automatically better. KPSI isn't a grade for quality, it's a roadmap to the style you actually want.

• Under 80 — village and tribal rugs like Gabbeh, Baluch and Qashqai. Coarser weave, bold geometry, rustic character.
• 80–200 — solid everyday luxury. Hamadan, Heriz, Tabriz. Durable, beautifully detailed, built to last generations.
• 200–400 — very fine work. Kashan, Isfahan, Nain and fine Tabriz, where curvilinear designs get ultra-crisp.
• 400–1,200+ — the pinnacle. Top-grade Nain, Isfahan silk-foundation pieces, the finest silk rugs. Rare and investment-grade.

Black is the hardest colour to build a Persian rug on. 🧶

Most fine rugs start from red, ivory or indigo, because those grounds forgive. Black shows everything — every knot that sits a fraction proud, every line that wanders. Weave a medallion on black and there is nowhere to hide.

This Tabriz is built on black, and then answers the difficulty with precision: roughly 484 knots per square inch, silk and wool pile on a pure silk foundation. The medallion floats in ivory and blush, ringed by floral tracery so fine it reads more like engraving than pile, and the whole thing is framed in a soft rose border that cools the contrast.

Think you're looking at a real Persian rug — or a machine-made fake? 🔍

Five ways to tell, in about a minute:

1. Check the back. A genuine hand-knotted rug shows the knot structure mirroring the front design perfectly. No canvas backing, no latex layer.
2. Look at the fringe. On a real Persian rug it's a natural continuation of the internal warp threads. Stretched, sewn or glued on separately? Fake.
3. Feel the fibers. Real wool feels warm and slightly lanolin-rich. Genuine silk feels cool, smooth and naturally lustrous — never slick or synthetic.
4. Spot the abrash. Slight color shifts across the field come from organic dye lots. Perfectly flat, uniform color usually means machine-made with synthetic dyes.
5. Demand documentation. A reputable dealer always provides a certificate of authenticity with origin, age, materials and weaving technique.
