Tool of the Week: Tuning Hammer

The Tuning Hammer is a tool used by piano technicians to move the pins at the top of the piano and set strings in tune.

This particular tuning hammer came to me from the tool chest of a blind piano technician operating in Northwest Washington State, where I grew up. He passed away when I was fifteen years old, and much of his personal tool collection was given to the RPT that I was apprenticed to and learned my trade from. Since he had a full set of tools, he decided to sell most of those tools on e-bay. I managed to take a peek at the tools, and the tuning hammer caught my eye first. Every craftsman has a love of well-made tools, and this one just seemed to be made for me. It fit in my hand perfectly and granted me control of my tuning pins like no hammer I had ever handled before. It was manufactured by D. H. Lang and Co. from Chicago, and is made with drop-forged steel and a hardwood handle. Easily over 70 years old, it is my pride and joy out of my entire tool collection.
