Before Venmo, credit cards, or even the promise of a reliable ride home, there was “mad money.”
The phrase dates to the early 20th century and originally described emergency cash a woman carried in case a date ended badly and she needed to make her own way home. By midcentury, jewelers transformed the idea into something clever and beautifully literal: tiny Mad Money charms containing a tightly folded bill, often accompanied by a miniature hammer to “break” the case in an emergency.
These wonderfully detailed mechanical charms are more than playful pieces of vintage jewelry. They tell a story of independence, preparedness, and the quiet freedom of always having something set aside for yourself. Even more special, both still contain their original dollar bills from the midcentury era, making each one a tiny time capsule of the period.
