Amazon has historically sold certain popular books at a loss or with extremely slim profit margins. This is known as a loss leader strategy: the company accepts losing money (or making very little) on a bestselling book because it encourages customers to shop on Amazon, where they're likely to buy other, more profitable items.

Independent bookstores generally can't do this. They have much higher wholesale costs relative to their size and rely on book sales to cover expenses like rent, payroll, and utilities. Selling books below cost would quickly become unsustainable for most indie stores.
