Before we open the Oakland Mall Time Capsule this Saturday, we wanted to share something pretty special: the original 1996 plaque that commemorates the time capsule and is still displayed on the Oakland Mall sign along I-75.

The plaque lists the names of the people who contributed items to the time capsule 30 years ago. It’s a snapshot of the people who helped preserve a little piece of Oakland Mall and the community in 1996.

WHERE WERE YOU 30 YEARS AGO? In 1996, Oakland Mall was replacing its original 1968 sign with a modernized version, and a time capsule was sealed and placed inside the pylon of the new sign along I-75.

Now, 30 years later, we’re opening it — exactly 30 years to the day at our Take Me Back to the ‘90s - Oakland Mall event on Saturday, August 29th.

But first, we need your help! We’re trying to identify the people in these photos and track them down so we can invite them back to Oakland Mall for the opening. If you recognize someone — a friend, family member, coworker, or even yourself — tag them or tell us who they are!

Some of these people may sadly no longer be with us, but we’d love to hear their stories and connect with their families.

And is it just us, or does it look some are doing the Macarena dance? 💃🕺 It was 1996, after all! Look at those clothes, the hairstyles… and not a cell phone in sight! People were just enjoying the moment.
