Probably the coolest modification job we’ve done, certainly the most emotionally intense.
This bass began life as a Dunable R2. Purchased by our good friend and bass player extraordinaire, Colin Glover, he recently began playing with a new band in a very low tuning and needed the R2’s extended 35” scale to achieve proper intonation. He ordered black Hipshot tuners and a Badass III high mass bridge to add both aesthetic and performance upgrades. Then we had our friends at Akron-based S.I.T. strings build a custom string set (affectionately named “Fits Like a Glover”), and we went to work installing the new pieces and dialing in the setup.
Unfortunately, even after customizing the bridge, we could not get the intonation correct.
Enter the Hipshot Monorail single string bass bridges. With those installed in a staggered footprint, we managed to get it perfect.
But… that’s hardly where the modifications ended.
Colin contacted another good friend, Adam Petitjean at Petitjean Customs, and had him make a custom Arachnid truss rod cover and a custom memorial cavity cover dedicated to Colin’s recently departed father. Both pieces turned out incredibly well and added not only coolness but soul to the Dunable.
Then, in true memorial fashion, we drilled a small cavity under the electronics cover where Colin added his father’s ashes. We, very carefully, capped this area with a small section of dowel rod not only leaving some air and open room but paying extra attention not to allow any wood glue to fall below the cap allowing the ashes to remain loose and move with Colin as he rocks this beast on stage along with his beloved father.
Ultimately, this was a weeks long process that at times concerned us both that we would not be able to achieve the playability demanded from the tuning but, perseverance and a little imagination gave truth to that old saying, “good things come to those who wait”.
After some hugs, a few tears, and quite a bit of goosebumps, he took it home yesterday playing as well as he had hoped. It will see its first stage Sunday. The first of many, many more to come.
We could not feel more honored to have been able to be a part of this.
