Julie Warren Martin (Conn) Stone Sculpture

Measures: 12.5” Tall

Price: TBD/Inquire

Julie Warren Conn is a sculptor with a penchant for exposing the hidden beauty within her materials. Her sculptures in marble, alabaster, and bronze are organic and abstract: a perfect contrast to the hard minerals and metals with which she works. Although Conn often sculpts in a style self-described as “form for form’s sake,” the flowing lines and intense contours in her work can often speak to a formal aesthetic that's clearest in her more representational pieces. These sculptures, which display influence from traditional artistic traditions, allow the viewer to see how Conn views the world while also contextualizing her work as a whole.

Among the most satisfying aspects of Conn's work is the textural quality of her materials, which play to the compositional and structural parts of her sculptures. Conn brings the beautiful variations of marble and alabaster to the surface, allowing these movements in stone to communicate additional layers of artistic interest. Other notable qualities in Conn’s work are her use of negative space and the cyclical aspects, full of double meaning and an energy that seems to flow into itself.

Michael Parkes is the world's leading magical realist painter, sculptor, and stone lithographer. His decades of success as a fine artist stand out in the art world where few artists ever achieve success in both the primary and secondary markets. Michael Parkes' works are collected by celebrities, prominent private collectors, and galleries around the world, and his body of work stands for all ages. His first one-man show was in Amsterdam back in 1977. Additional one-man exhibitions of Michael Parkes have taken place at Basel Art in Switzerland, Art Chicago, Art Fair NY, Frankfurt Bookfair, Amsterdam Art Fair, Tefaf Art and Antiques Fair Maastricht and numerous exhibitions in their galleries in Amsterdam and New York from 1977 onwards.

Though he studied graphic art and painting at the University of Kansas, his unique style evolved very much in isolation, after a period in which he gave up the practice of art altogether and went off to India in search of philosophical illumination: born in 1944, Michael Parkes was very much of the hippie generation.

Earlier on, Michael Parkes had painted in the generally Abstract Expressionist style normal among his teachers, but after his pause for reflection he began to draw and paint in a meticulous style of detailed representation which would enable him to give full expression to his inner world of images.

The style was in principle realistic, the subject matter magical, and Magic Realism has characterised his work ever since.

From Gary’s website…

"My work is a study in motion, with a natural flow and balance creating a 360-degree experience of emotion, energy and life," he explains. "The patina finishes are the result of using experimental combinations of chemicals and heat to create inspired and variable effects from realistic to unpredictably exotic."

An Energetic Outdoorsman

Cooley has spent years fishing, hunting, hiking and running rivers throughout the Northwest. During these trips he sketches, photographs, sculpts, or paints the scenery and wildlife around him. While raising a family, he ran a successful business for 20 years in Junction City, Oregon, pursuing his artistic interests when he could. Since the sale of his business in 1985, he has dedicated himself full time to his art.

Cooley's sculpting process blends observation and technique. He carefully considers every detail, contemplating form and movement and incorporating variations in texture, light, shadows... and attitude.

The winner of numerous commissions and awards, including "Artist of the Year" from Safari Club International, Cooley presents work that ranges from realistic to abstract, life-size to tabletop. You'll find Cooley originals in living rooms, landscapes, corporate offices, and private collections worldwide.

Paul Wonner was born in Tucson in 1920, and moved to the Bay Area for the first time to study at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland (now California College of the Arts), where he earned a Bachelor's degree in 1941. After military service in Texas, Wonner moved to New York, where he worked as a package designer and briefly continued his training at the Art Students League. He returned to the Bay Area in 1950 and by 1953 completed Bachelor's and Master's degrees in fine arts at UC Berkeley. Wonner then worked as a librarian at UC Davis in the late 1950s, until his move to Southern California, where he taught at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and UC Santa Barbara during the 1960s. He enjoyed collegial support for his work from originators of the Bay Area Figurative style, including David Park (1911-1960) and Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993). He painted in a brushy manner similar to theirs until the late 1970s, when his style turned crisp, emphasizing bright light and sharp shadows, and he concentrated on still life themes. The Dutch Baroque still life tradition served as a historical source for Wonner, but he typically painted objects from everyday contemporary life. His mature pictures distinctively portray things as separated by almost surrealistically vacant distended spaces. Acclaimed for his distinctive mature style of still life painting, had numerous solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Major museums throughout the United States have collected his work. In recent years, he returned to painting human figures in vaguely allegorical arrangements and settings.
