So often, we assume that if God is guiding our steps, things will go smoothly. But this Psalm gives us a far more realistic, and yet more hopeful vision. It says even when you fall, you are not abandoned. God’s guidance doesn’t guarantee the absence of failure, but the presence of His hand in the failure.
God establishes your steps…He’s not a passive observer. He is invested in your direction. But even in that divine orchestration, there are falls. And here’s the paradox of grace: falling does not mean forsaken. Why? “The Lord upholds his hand.”
Imagine a child learning to walk, holding their father’s hand. They trip. But they don’t crash to the ground, they are held. Their footing isn’t perfect, but the hand holding them is.
This is the Christian life. God is not a coach yelling from the sidelines, “Try harder!” He is the Father who walks beside you, holding your hand through every stumble. And in Christ, we know this more fully. Jesus took the ultimate fall for us so that our falls could never separate us from God’s grip.
If you’re in a season of stumbling, hear this: You are still in the hand of God. Grace means your falls are never fatal. 🥹
