Always learning. Always growing. 🐾

Continuing education and professional collaboration are a huge part of how we better serve the dogs and owners in our community.

This week included attending an International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) webinar:
“From Social Conflict to Social Fluency: Using the E-Collar to Support Dog-to-Dog Communication” presented by Mark McCabe.

We also attended the Tucson Pet Care Network professionals meeting to collaborate with fellow trainers, pet businesses, veterinarians, walkers, and other animal professionals about upcoming pet events, community outreach, and ways we can continue strengthening the pet community here in Tucson.

We’re also excited to be attending the IACP Annual Educational Conference this August in Newport Beach for additional seminars, hands-on learning opportunities, and continued professional development within the canine industry.

Dog training is constantly evolving, and we believe good trainers never stop learning.

The better we understand dogs, communication, behavior, and the needs of our community—the better we can support the people and pets who trust us.

One of the most underrated skills a dog can learn is simply how to walk calmly in heel beside their handler. 🐾

Not pulling.
Not zig-zagging.
Not dragging their owner down the street trying to investigate every distraction.

A structured heel creates clarity and confidence for both ends of the leash.

When your dog learns to stop and sit calmly alongside you during a walk, you suddenly have a tool for navigating real life:
🐾 Passing neighbors
🐾 Other dogs
🐾 Bikes and strollers
🐾 Loud trash trucks
🐾 Busy public environments

The walk stops being chaotic and starts becoming communication.

For nervous or reactive dogs, structured leash work also helps build confidence through guidance and predictability. Dogs begin looking to their handler instead of reacting to every new environment around them.

And the best part?
That confidence doesn’t start outside—it starts inside the home.

Reliable leash manners and engagement are built through structure, consistency, and clear communication long before we ever challenge the dog in public environments.

Because obedience isn’t just about commands.

It’s about creating a dog that can move through the world calmly and confidently beside you.

A tired dog isn’t always a trained dog. 🐾

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is:
“If I just exercise my dog more, the behavior will stop.”

But dogs also need:
🧠 Mental engagement
🧠 Clear communication
🧠 Structure and accountability

Roughly 45 minutes of quality mental stimulation can work a dog’s brain similarly to hours of physical exercise.

A dog can hike 5 miles and still:
• Drag you down the street
• Ignore recall
• Bark nonstop
• Launch out the front door

Training isn’t just about burning energy—it’s about building understanding.

This is why we love:
🦴 Lick mats
🧩 Puzzle toys
🐾 Scent work & engagement games
🥣 Slow feeders
📦 DIY enrichment activities
🎯 Short focused training sessions

Giving dogs healthy ways to think, problem solve, and engage with their owners creates calmer, more fulfilled companions.

At Reveille K9, we focus on practical training and engagement that holds up in real-world life—not just during the session.

And yes… high-value rewards definitely help too. 😂🦴

People often ask why we started making our own treats and chews—and honestly, it started with one very determined dog. 🐾

During service dog training for my personal dog, Patches needed something truly high-value to stay motivated while learning advanced tasks like working handicap access buttons and building reliability in distracting real-world environments… because let’s be real—Great Pyrenees need to be paid well for their time away from the farm. 😂

For him, that magic reward was duck hearts.

As we continued training and working with other dogs, we realized many owners struggled with the same thing:

“How do I get my dog engaged?”
“How do I become more valuable than the environment?”
“Why does my picky dog love what’s in your treat pouch but ignore me at home?”

That sent us back to our agriculture/FFA childhood and homestead roots.

We started producing single-ingredient treats and enrichment chews using responsibly harvested whole-animal products—focusing on ethical sourcing, reducing waste, and feeding dogs the way they were designed to eat.

The first batches were made from animals we personally raised on our North Carolina homestead.

No fillers. No junk. Just clean rewards designed to support:
🦴 Motivation
🦴 Performance
🦴 Health & longevity
🦴 Real-world training engagement

Because dogs crave real meat, real scent, and whole-prey-inspired rewards that tap into instinct and drive.

And honestly… watching dogs light up over something as simple as a duck heart never gets old. ❤️🐾

Keep an eye out for our upcoming community pop-ups and markets! We only do small batches, so inventory changes often.

What’s the difference?
Therapy Dogs vs. Service Dogs 🐾

Not all working dogs have the same role—and understanding the difference matters.

🐾 Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort and emotional support to many people in places like:
• Hospitals
• Schools
• Nursing homes
• Community programs

They need to be:
✔ Social
✔ Environmentally stable
✔ Calm and adaptable in public settings

Their job is community-focused.

🐾 Service Dogs

Service dogs are trained to support one individual with a diagnosed disability by performing specific trained tasks.

Examples can include:
• Medical alert work
• Mobility assistance
• Psychiatric tasking
• Grounding and interruption behaviors

Their focus is their handler—not the public.

Service dogs require:
✔ Advanced obedience
✔ Public access reliability
✔ Task-specific training
✔ Neutrality in distracting environments

Both roles are important—but they are not interchangeable.

The right training, temperament, and expectations make all the difference for long-term success on both ends of the leash.
