Wheel Gun Wednesday has me thinking, If you could pick any of the Night Guard series that Smith & Wesson use to make which one would you pick?

Originally introduced in the late 2000s. Smith & Wesson’s Night Guard line was built for serious defensive use. Lightweight scandium frames, tritium night sights, and a caliber list from 38 special all the way up to 44 mag. They offered big bore performance in a small package. Despite their short production run they’ve become some of the most sought after modern revolver.

The Joslyn Carbine Model 1864 is a Civil War-era breechloading cavalry firearm that represents a key step in the transition from percussion ignition to metallic cartridge systems. Designed by Benjamin Franklin Joslyn, it offered mounted troops a faster and more practical method of reloading in the field compared to earlier muzzleloaders.

Produced in limited numbers and issued late in the war, the Joslyn never saw the widespread adoption of repeaters like the Spencer Repeating Carbine, but it remains an important example of evolving fi****ms technology during the 1860s.

This example retains strong original features, including a clear FDL cartouche for inspector Frank D. Leet. The anchor marking indicates U.S. Navy acceptance, and this carbine is chambered in .54 rimfire, a less common configuration that reflects its place in the early development of metallic cartridge arms.

Introduced in 1934, the Japanese Type 94 Nambu was developed as a compact sidearm for tank crews, aviators, and other troops who needed something smaller than the standard Type 14. Chambered in 8mm Nambu, it served throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II.

Though intended to be a modern and compact military pistol, the Type 94 became infamous for its unusual exposed sear bar on the side of the frame. If the pistol was cocked and the safety was off, pressure on this bar could fire the pistol without the trigger being pulled. This design flaw earned the Type 94 a lasting reputation as one of the most controversial military pistols of the war.

Despite its shortcomings, the Type 94 remains an important piece of Japanese military history and a fascinating example of wartime fi****ms.

M25 – M21 – M1D

Three post-WWII semi-automatic U.S. sniper rifle platforms.

M1D – Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, the M1D utilized a barrel fitted with an integral scope mounting block for the M84 optic. The M84 scope offered 2.2x magnification with improved waterproofing and shock resistance over the earlier M81 and M82 scopes. Depending on production period, rifles could be equipped with either the M2 or T37 flash hider. Adopted in 1952, the M1D served through the Vietnam War before being gradually replaced by the M21.

M21 – Developed from the M14 and chambered in 7.62 NATO, the M21 gradually replaced the M1D as the U.S. Army’s primary sniper rifle. It featured detachable box magazines, improved accuracy, and the ART II scope system. The rifle pictured here is a Fulton Armory M14 NM signed by R. Lee Ermey and equipped with a Leatherwood ART II 3–9x scope. The Adjustable Ranging Telescope used an external cam linked to the magnification ring, automatically setting elevation for M118 match ammunition at ranges from 300–900 meters.

M25 – An improvement over the M21, the M25 was developed in the early 1990s for U.S. special operations and precision rifle roles. Intended to provide enhanced accuracy and reliability, it was effective at engagements out to approximately 700 meters and beyond in capable hands. Original M25 rifles typically featured a Leupold Ultra M3 10x optic, Brookfield Precision mount, McMillan M3A adjustable stock, Krieger barrel, and optional OPS Inc suppressor. The rifle pictured here features an LRB Arms M25 rear-lug receiver with integrated scope rail and a Leupold Mark 4 4.5–14x50 optic.
