This Old Toro mower is a perfect example of it take more than a reel grinder and height of cut gauge to get reels dialed in. I ground these reels, set reel to bed knife contact to .002 clearance. Paralleled the rollers to the bed knife and height of cut to .875 of an inch. The customer was bringing it down from another dull rental mower, so it took a few mows to get the grass down and scalp marks out to see the full effect. I came back to do a follow up and to repair a few other items on the mower and seen it wasn’t mowing correctly. I rechecked my setup and reset the contact, mowed a couple of passes. The mow was better, but still streaky. I back-lapped the machine with 80 grit which made it better but still not right. Using a prism gauge I was able to see the difference in each reel. By adjusting to down pressure springs and attitude of the bed knife I was able to get the reels cutting very consistent. There is still some play in the rollers but for a 20 plus year old mower it’s mowing pretty good. Sometimes you have to spend sometime making passes with the mower and making one adjustment at a time to resolve cut issues.

I’ve been asked to hold another workshop at the Tennessee Turfgrass Association 2027 Conference. This year we will have more time allocated for training on Wednesday. What are some things that you’d like to discuss or training items that would benefit your career that can be done in the convention training room? Trying to get started on this early, any insight is appreciated.

Nonprofit, professional association decided to the enhancement of turfgrass management from all aspects including promoting the industry through education, scholarship and research.

I’m few days late but I didn’t want to let it slip by with out saying THANK YOU. Just over 2 years ago I took the leap to leave my full time employment to chase the dream of becoming a business owner. In that 2 years you all have made it to where not a week has went by without my schedule being fully booked. The lesson learned in this last 2 years can’t be listed, but thankful to have solid customer base that supported my family and I in this journey. I look forward to the future and can’t think of any other industry I’d rather be in for a career.

Back on my grind! Picked up at in Chattanooga this morning, brought back to Tullahoma to my shop. Reels disassembled, cleaned, new bed knife installed and ground, reels ground, set to customer specifications, and reinstalled on the machine. Heading back to Chattanooga in the morning to get the fields ready for Spain. I'm thankful that Mercedes Benz Stadium and Baylor School both trusted me with their Reel Mowers for the World Cup.
