29 Years Ago Today, Recess Arrived on ABC! 📺🛝
On August 31, 1997, Disney’s newest animated series, Recess, received a special sneak preview on ABC. “The Break In” and “The New Kid” introduced viewers to T.J. Detweiler and the playground society of Third Street School.
Disney’s One Saturday Morning block was scheduled to launch on September 6. However, ABC postponed it for coverage of the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. Recess officially debuted with the block on September 13, making the August 31 preview the only glimpse audiences received for two weeks.
Created by Paul Germain and Joe Ansolabehere, Recess carried some serious 1990s animation history. Germain co-created Rugrats, while Ansolabehere worked as one of its early writers and story editors. They brought that understanding of childhood logic from the world of toddlers to the elementary school playground. ✏️
The preview featured Ross Malinger, best known as Jonah in Sleepless in Seattle, as the original voice of T.J. He continued throughout the first season and into the second before Andrew Lawrence took over the role.
Alongside T.J. were athletic Vince, tough and fearless Spinelli, brilliant Gretchen, gentle Mikey and nervous new kid Gus. Third Street had its own government, class system and unwritten laws. King Bob ruled from the jungle gym, the Ashleys guarded their social status, and Randall reported everything to Miss Finster. 👑⚽
Beneath the comedy, Recess explored friendship, individuality, fairness and peer pressure. It understood that, to a child, recess could feel like an entire world of its own.
The series produced 65 half-hour episodes, a theatrical film and three direct-to-video films. Its final episode arrived in 2001, but reruns kept Third Street School alive for another generation.
Twenty-nine years later, the bell may have stopped ringing, but the memories of Saturday mornings with T.J. and the gang remain. 🔔❤️
