Joe Hall’s newest is Buffalo Free Rapid Transit (, 2026). Brandon Shimoda writes: “Joe Hall’s poetry—which I’ve been reading so long, I’ve grown up with it—is a transit map and, more bracingly, a kind of vengeance. It hews so close to the bone of existence, it chews through it; it drinks the marrow for us, transforming despair into ecstasy for us. It is, in this way, sacrificial. As Hall says, deep in the blazing guts of this book: ‘that’s the job: / touch the ashes / touch and touch / the ashes.’”

Marty Cain’s most recent book is Prelude (, 2023), which Aase Berg describes this way: “A furious and sorrowful deep-dive together with Wordsworth through nature, into the pixels of the body, dreams, space, and matter. I feel blown away and grateful that such brutally excessive transformations are still possible.”

Unthinkable thoughts with Brahim El Guabli, Luke Fischbeck, and Mary Walling Blackburn

Let’s gather together on the occasion of the publication of El Guablis’ Desert Imaginations (University of California Press) and Walling Blackburn’s Cream Psychosis (e-flux/Sternberg Press).

We will read short excerpts from our disparate publications and then open up the floor to discuss together how each of us and any of us might construct plots that twist the counterfeit logics that order public life today. Light refreshments will be available.

Together, we will conjure the unthinkable—to refuse to distract ourselves from genocides, conspiracies, and inhumanity by stressing the need to think beyond the systemic and structural training and information we take for granted. We invite everyone to think unthinkable thoughts: to demand, with dog-like insistence, decent shelter and our equal portion of pleasure from the resource-hoarders and fact manipulators. Moreover, we will locate our connection to the unthinkable within ordinary life and outside the language of charisma and leadership. The unthinkable also requires paying attention to other ways of speaking about the world; in a language that communicates without speaking. One that evokes other dimensions of being, not unlike the jinn or the ghost.

Some (unnamed) snacks and beverages will be provided.
