ARB CLEARS DOWNTOWN PROJECTS
🏛️ Three Downtown Mobile projects received the go-ahead Wednesday from the Architectural Review Board, including façade renovations along Dauphin Street, a new house in DeTonti Square and fencing beside the Fort Conde Inn.
🧱 The first approval covers façade renovations at 310, 316 and 318 Dauphin Street, including the former Spot of Tea building.
The work includes new storefronts, windows, doors and lighting. Aluminum façade panels at 316-318 Dauphin will be removed and replaced with thin brick veneer.
Plans for the three adjoining properties show Sugo Italian Steakhouse at 310 Dauphin, The Dauphin at Cathedral Square at 316 Dauphin and The Square Workspace at 318 Dauphin.
The board approved the application as amended following discussion of several façade details.
• The board also issued a Certificate of Appropriateness for a new two-story single-family residence at 257 N. Jackson Street after months of revisions to the design.
The house is planned for a vacant lot in the DeTonti Square Historic District. The house will sit farther back from Jackson Street than nearby historic homes, allowing two large oak trees to remain. An existing brick wall along the street will also remain.
Board members Wednesday praised changes made after earlier reviews and work with the Design Review Committee. A neighboring resident also spoke in support of the project, saying the applicants had worked with neighbors and the board through the review process.
• At 159 St. Emanuel Street, the board approved plans to enclose vacant property adjacent to the Fort Conde Inn.
The project includes a 7-foot-4-inch brick screen wall along St. Emanuel Street, brick piers, 6-foot wood fencing and gates.
The enclosed property is intended for a future pool, spa and sauna area associated with the Fort Conde Inn, but those amenities were not part of the application approved Wednesday.
With Wednesday’s approvals, all three projects have received the Certificates of Appropriateness required from the Architectural Review Board for the work presented.
