This book introduces you to some of the best writings about arid lands and offers an overview of how our thinking about the desert has changed over the years. Eighteen authors are presented chronologically. Wild places each author within their historical period and provides biographical context.

The excerpts reflect the journeys and perspectives of myth-makers, beaver trappers, explorers, geopoliticians, bureaucrats, professors, art critics, naturalists, philosophic scientists, scientific philosophers, National Park Service and Forest Service rangers, and novelists.

“Sunrise from Fall Equinox to Spring Equinox.”
Joshua Tree photographer Bonnie Hawthorne ( Bonnie Hawthorne ) noticed that the sun rose to the left of her porch in summer and far to the right in winter. She got up before dawn every day for six months to shoot the sunrise from the same spot on her porch for a time-lapse film. This poster features selected frames from that film, illustrating the effect of Earth’s axial tilt on the Sun’s position between the fall and spring equinoxes.

If you’ve traveled in Morocco, chances are you’ve sipped mint tea from a Beldi glass. Beldi means “traditional” or “native” in Arabic. The glasses were first produced in 1946, and since then, the Beldi glass has become the preferred tea glass in Morocco for enjoying mint tea.
Beldi glasses are made using traditional methods. Each one is mouth-blown from recycled w**e and b**r bottles. Durable and full of character, they often feature small bubbles and subtle imperfections that give them their distinctive, appearance.
One of the glass’s signature features is the small ridge just above its midpoint, which provides a secure grip even when the contents are hot. While traditionally used for tea, Beldi glasses are equally suited for serving cold beverages.
We carry the Beldi glasses in amber, available in sets of six and presented in traditional Moroccan gift packaging. We also carry the matching Amber Beldi Jug.
