It's hot, buggy, and dirty. Every day is hard work, the to do list never ends, and I never have enough money. Some days, I ask myself, why am I doing this? But there are just some things about this life I could never give up, and they are hard to explain. IYKYK. ❤️

☀️ Heat hits different when you don't have an air conditioner to hide in.

Living off-grid, there isn't really an escape. No popping down to Kwik Trip for a bag of ice. No dipping our feet in a lake or stream because we have to be here for the animals.

The cabin holds onto the heat so we sit outside under a broken tent. The chickens spend the day panting and holding their wings out in the shade under the house. The dog stretches out on the coolest patch of dirt she can find, panting constantly. The cat sleeps the entire day. Even the mosquitoes seem too exhausted to fly. Everything sits still.

You start measuring time by little gifts: a breeze that lasts thirty seconds, a cloud that covers the sun, a big gulp of lukewarm water, and the moment the woods finally begin to cool after sunset.

Living this way has taught me that comfort isn't something to expect, it's something to notice, to appreciate.

Hard days have a way of sharpening your gratitude. You don't daydream about luxury. You daydream about washing off in a cool bath, drinking water that's actually cold, or lying in bed without being drenched in sweat and having mosquitos buzzing by your head.

It's uncomfortable. Sometimes it's miserable.
But it also reminds me how deeply connected we are to the weather, the land, and the animals that share it with us. We all wait for that same breeze. We all celebrate the first cool evening. And luckily we don't have these hot days very often up here in the Northland.

Life out here strips away a lot of the distance between us and nature. And that's one of the hardest and most beautiful parts of living this way. 🌻

Well the storm last night was super scary, but everyone on the homestead made it through the hail and high winds, minus my market tent which I left outside until it was too late to retrieve it. 😥 Lessons learned. My garden struggled a bit but plants are resilient. 🌱❤️

There were a lot of downed trees in the woods this morning which required clean up in the blazing heat, but nature has a way of giving and taking. One of those trees was a balsam fir that has cones on it, and since they grow at the very tippy top, we rarely get them. But now we get to make mugolio (pine cone syrup) again!!!! 🌲🌲🌲

Tomorrow is going to be a FUN FILLED DAY for Muddy Trails! Come see me at the Civic Center Farmers Market from 11-1:30 for Opening Day and get all your sweet syrups, crochet creatures, and farm fresh eggs.

THEN I will be at Mentor North's SummerFest from 5-9pm at Earth Rider for our annual fundraiser, which is PACKED full of fun activities, live music (featuring Nur-D and the Gemstones!), great food, and awesome vibes. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

If you want to get into SummerFest for FREE, you can volunteer instead! There is a lot that goes into making a day like this happen, and we could use your help!

And finally, Mentor North is also hosting an incredible auction, where you can bid on some really great items that will help raise money to support youth in our community AND help you get a great deal on cool things.

You can find all the links to buy tickets, volunteer, and join the auction in the comments. I hope to see you all at some point in the day!
