The specialization of retrievers by breed wasn't widespread among hunters in the first part of the 20th century. Waterfowlers brought a dog to retrieve and it might be a retriever, a pointer, or a spaniel. A Springer Spaniel working large geese was not uncommon. Small field spaniels were popular with Midwest waterfowlers .
