"Farmers like Alita Kelly hold long-term leases — in this case, 99 years. The lease terms, as the Trust describes them, are “intentionally equity-centered and transformational.” Kelly pays affordable rent rather than carrying the crushing debt of a land purchase. She can invest in stewardship, build her farm business, and envision a multi-generational future on the land without the specter of foreclosure or forced sale hanging over her.

The model also solves a problem on the other end of the transaction. Aging farmers who have devoted their lives to the land often face an impossible choice: sell to the highest bidder (often a corporate buyer) and watch their legacy disappear, or pass up financial security to protect what they built. The Farmland Commons creates a third path — an equitable exit that preserves the farm for the next generation while honoring what the departing farmer created."

🐛🌿 It’s here! Meet the Life on a Leaf: Celebrating Caterpillars and Host Plants poster.

Illustrated by the incredibly talented Avani Hope (.hope on IG), this year’s design showcases 19 caterpillar species alongside the native host plants they rely on, offering a beautiful visual guide to these essential relationships. Many species of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) will only lay their eggs on one or two specific plants, making the availability of native host plants essential to their survival.
