Next, a friend asked me to build him a guitar. I asked if he wanted 3 or 4 string, slide or fingered? He went straight to the top. 4 string fingered. I had never made one. When I was done, I liked it so much it took me 2 months to give it to him. I had to build another first. First picture is Chris's guitar, second is mine and the one in the video, along side the 8 string..

CBG's were originally non fretted, slide instruments. Made by poor folk who couldn't afford to buy an instrument, usually 3 string and really rough, with high action for slide. I've never played slide. It would be very easy for me to set these up for slide. I think they would really shine there!
The very first CBG I built was 3 string for slide. Almost just a toy, in the right hands it could be amazing.

Here is number 5. Being an 8 string and a round back neck (7 and 8 are square necks) I made this one with a truss rod. Good thing too, because the neck turned out too flat. You must have the strings pull a slight relief in the neck for a tiny curve. Lucky I used a dual action truss rod, I simply adjusted the truss rod backwards for the relief. However for that reason I am selling this one for less money, only $250. It's perfectly stable, it's just that major manufacturers would call it a second, so I am too. You want jangle? You got it! With the octave tuning it's almost too much. You tune it like a 12 string, the first two sets are tuned to octaves, drones on top. The last two are tuned same notes. If you know 12 string, you know what I'm talking about. I put electric guitar strings on this one. Almost mandolin or mandola like, only electric. No volume or tone controls, just straight in. I've always had my electric guitars wide open anyway. Flame Maple neck with Leopardwood fingerboard, 24.75 inch scale. Locking tuners, brass tail piece and truss cover. A little top heavy but you get used to it. This poor thing needs a home, it's been sitting lonely in a corner. Beautiful art even if you don't play it!
