Robert Scott Former Negro League Pitcher

Pedro Sierra was a special guest of the Somerset Patriots last night on Negro League Night. Sierra pitched for the Indianapolis Clowns in 1954-55 and moved to the Stars in 1956. He says he was one of the last Negro League players to sign a major league contract, with the Washington Senators in 1959. But he was drafted into the Army, pitching for the Fort Hood Tanks. He played baseball for 22 years. “The happiest time of my life was on the baseball field” said Sierra.
Following an on field pre-game presentation, Sierra signed autographs for Patriots fans.

I had a wonderful talk with Robert Scott yesterday afternoon. He once again asked me to thank all of you for your interest in both his career and his current health. First of all, both Scotty and Mae are well but pretty much have been on lockdown because of the Covid 19 Virus. Remember that Mr. Scott is now 90 years old, while May is 84 years young. They both have been very careful with their movements and about what they even receive in the mail in order to remain in the best health. That is the reason why Scotty hasn't done any signings this year. Good news though, Scotty & I discussed the possibility of a private signing for his Fscebook Page in the next coming months. We will keep you updated about that as we get closer to doing it.

I was also able to pass along some of your messages and questions to Scotty. Among the questions were:
Q. Have you done any video or audio interviews about your time playing in the Negro Leagues?
A. I did recently do an interview with the Baltimore Orioles broadcast team, during a game. It was part of their observance of the 100th Anniversary of the Negro Leagues.
Q. Did you have any favorite teammates during your playing days?
A. We concentrated so much on our play that we got along but really didn't have many close friendships while we were playing. I'll have to look through some old playing photographs that I have to refresh my memory and I promise to give you a few names the next time we talk.
Q. Were any cities more accepting or less accepting of yourself or your black teammates? How did Philadelphia treat you?
A. We were treated very well for most of my career in every city that we played. In most of the cities there were actually many more white spectators in attendence at the games and they were real fans of ours.

Finally, at the request of a young fan of Mr. Scott, a 16 year old from Washington DC, Scotty has agreed to speak to the young man by phone. The youngster did a report in school last year on the Negro Leagues and was very interested in Mr. Scott's career. We'll update all of you on the story of that phone call soon.

I just got off of the phone after speaking to Robert Scott. He thanks you all for thinking of him & especially thanks those of you who were concerned about not seeing him in Cooperstown this past weekend. The trip was just too much for him and Mae to make this year, but he's hoping to be with Derek Jeter next summer for his induction. This past Sunday Scotty actually. did an autograph signing at a small card show in the Atlanta area. Mr. Scott did ask me to pass along his condolences to Doreen Henry on the loss of her husband and to the family of longtime card show promotor/autograph dealer Mike Kushner who passed away recently.

Just received a phone call from Scotty! Both he and Mae are doing well (for 89 years of age) and he wanted me to say hi to all of you. Scotty also asked me to thank you all again in your interest in him. He's still very excited about his roll in the documentary, "The Other Boys Of Summer". He's hoping the film will be more widely distributed soon. Mr. Scott is also expecting to be among the former players attending a special celebration of Hank Aaron by the Atlanta Braves later this spring.

Scotty called and we talked for a while this week. He said to relay to all of you how much he appreciates your warm comments & thoughts of him. As he's about four months away from his 89th birthday, his health is well at this time. He did do a signing recently with a few other Negro League players in the Atlanta area. He's also hoping that for the first time in the last few years, he and Mae will be able to make the trip to Cooperstown for the late July Hall of Fame Induction Weekend. Once again he and I thank all of you who follow this page.

Very happy to let you all know that I just spoke to Mr. Scott & he said to let you know that he's feeling well & appreciates your kind thoughts. He was very ill a short time ago but has made a full recovery and is looking forward to 2019. He also said to let you know that he will have an appearance in a new major motion picture documentary named, "The Other Boys of Summer". The movie premiers in NYC on January 31st. Scotty said that he's hoping to feel well enough to attend next summers Hall of Fame Weekend in Cooperstown for the first time in the past several years. I'll try to keep you informed if he's able to. Hopefully he'll also have some appearences in Georgia soon as well. Again, he thanks you all for your interest in him and he said to wish you all a Happy New Year... ⚾️⚾️⚾️⚾️

Question: What are some of the highlights you are most proud of from your baseball life?
Answer: There are several that I'm very proud of. In 1950, I played with the Jackie Robinson All-Stars. A few year ago I received an award from the Yankees and the Mets. I was honored by the Elizabeth, New Jersey Hall of Fame, and my picture is hanging in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
