❤️ Another Week of Love in Action at Thrifty Hippie ❤️

Some weeks, it’s hard to put into words just how much love can come from a community that cares. This has been one of those weeks. 🥹

Food for so many families. Blankets delivered to an organization serving our homeless neighbors. Clothing for a daughter coming out of a treatment center as she begins a new chapter in her life. A warm coat for someone who needed one. And four more Thanksgiving meals sponsored by people with generous hearts.

And we have to share some exciting news! 🧥❤️ Our coat drive for the kids was incredibly successful! Knowing that children will have warm coats to wear as the weather gets colder is such a beautiful reminder of what happens when a community comes together for its children. Every coat represents someone who cared enough to help.

We’ve also seen so many kids coming in for clothing on their day off from school Friday. Behind every visit is a family doing its best, a child who deserves to feel good about themselves, and a community that can help make life just a little easier.

To everyone who donates, sponsors a meal, shares what they have, volunteers their time, or simply shows up with a willing heart — THANK YOU. You are part of every blanket delivered, every meal shared, every child kept warm, and every person reminded that they have not been forgotten.

Thrifty Hippie has never been just about a thrift store. It’s about people taking care of people. It’s about dignity, hope, second chances, and loving our neighbors in practical ways.

We may never know the full story behind every person who walks through our doors, but we know this: everyone deserves compassion, and sometimes the smallest act of kindness can mean more than we will ever realize.

❤️ A GIVING WEEK AT THRIFTY HIPPIE

In case you didn’t remember why what you do is so important wanted to provide the following:

A woman called us in tears. Her daughter has cancer and was given about eight months left to live. She was looking for a wheelchair so she could take her little girl to the park another fun places. Because of a simple donation, she can now make those memories together during the precious time they have left.

We also had several women come to us as they work to escape domestic violence and begin again. We’ve been able to help with things for their apartments—those simple necessities that can make an empty place start to feel like home.

We were also able to provide ongoing assistance to our friends who are experiencing homelessness.

And through all of this, we are reminded that people helping people really does matter. Sometimes it’s a wheelchair. Sometimes it’s a shirt. Sometimes it’s food. Sometimes it’s a few household items that help someone take the first step toward a new life and we only have those resources because of you.

So pushing out our biggest needs to you again. More and more people are feeling the strain of higher grocery prices and so our food is going quickly. We’re also seeing more and more single moms and/or just young families who can’t afford to keep up with their kids ongoing need for new clothes as they outgrow the old. We are also seeing children coming from shelters who have had early lives that some us can’t even imagine and something as simple and important as clean clothes that fit can help make them feel safe and cared for.

If you have food, children’s clothing, household items, or other things you no longer need, please consider donating them to Thrifty Hippie.

Your donation may be sitting in your closet or pantry taking up space…

…but in someone else’s life, it could be the thing that gives them a little hope. ❤️

❤️ THIS IS WHAT COMMUNITY LOOKS LIKE ❤️

This week, we celebrated a young man who is recovering from a heart transplant. ❤️🙏 His grandmother has come to Thrifty Hippie throughout the year for different needs, and now, after everything he has been through, he is finally able to get back out into the community again.

So we’re celebrating a second chance at life, a family’s prayers being answered, a young man getting to live, heal, and move forward. ❤️

We also had a woman come in to gather supplies for people experiencing homelessness. She wasn’t shopping for herself — she was thinking about someone else who needed help.

We also got the opportunity to help several women furnish their homes as they begin new chapters and new beginnings. Sometimes starting over means having a place to sit, something to sleep on, dishes for the kitchen, or just a few things that make an empty house begin to feel like home.

And then there was one of our homeless friends. Saturday night, his tent caught fire and he lost everything that wasn’t on his back. When you don’t have much to begin with, losing everything can feel impossible.

But he called us, and we were able to help him get a new tent, a phone charger, clothing, food, and some of the basic things he needed to begin putting his life back together and begin the process of starting over.

We can’t fix everything, but we can listen, we can care, and we can help with what we have. And sometimes, that little bit of help is enough to remind someone that they haven’t been forgotten.

This is what we believe community should be.
Not judging.
Not asking what someone did wrong.
Just seeing a person who needs help and saying, “How can we help?”

Seven families will enjoy a Thanksgiving meal, neighbors will receive food, people recovering from surgery will have clothing, and a grandmother will have a TV for her boys—all because our community chose to show up for one another. ❤️

This week, your generosity turned everyday donations, support, and compassion into meaningful help for neighbors who needed it most.

🦃 Seven Hippie Helpers offered to sponsor families for Thanksgiving, helping provide warm meals and extra hope during the holiday season.

🥫 Our food bank continues to fill an ever growing need as for individuals and families struggling to make ends meet.

👕 We shared clothing and shoes with homeless friends, young adults trying trying to make it on minimum wage and even someone needing post-surgery clothes for therapy.

👵 We also helped a grandmother get a TV for her boys—a simple gift that can bring comfort and joy to a family.

👶 One of the sweetest moments was meeting a pregnant mom who came in wearing slippers but looking for baby clothes. She was only concerned with clothing her kids, but she walked out with new shoes and clothes for herself as well. Sometimes a small act of kindness can bring a smile, restore hope, and remind someone that they matter. ❤️

This is what our ministry is all about: neighbors helping neighbors and a community coming together to care for one another.

💛 Lifting Each Other Up, One Neighbor at a Time

The doors at Thrifty Hippie saw all kinds of courage this week. We met folks stepping into new jobs who just needed a few outfits to help them walk in with confidence. We welcomed moms working hard to rebuild life after recent custody changes. And we watched grandmas — the quiet heroes — gathering food for their grandchildren so they can focus on growing, learning, and being kids.

Our holiday sign‑ups for Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance are now underway, and we’re looking for anyone who would like to sponsor a family meal for a family who could use a little help making their holiday special this season.
And as always, our pantry shelves depend on steady donations of non‑perishables like rice, beans, pasta, sauce, canned meat, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, snacks, crackers, soups, and canned vegetables.

Every person who walked through our door this week carried a story. Every donation helped lighten someone’s load. No act is too small.

This week showed exactly what happens when community partners and neighbors come together.

A young man who’s been visiting us for food and essentials shared that he could qualify for a better job if he could finish his driver’s license. He’s already passed the written test — he just needs a way to practice driving. Later that same day, an organization that supports young adults aging out of foster care stopped by to see if they could refer their clients to us as a resource. When we asked if they might also help him, they immediately agreed.

We also helped a young woman gather supplies for her new apartment, and even discovered a solar system mobile — perfect for a future astronomer in our community.

These stories may seem different, but they all point to the same truth: when people with needs connect with organizations and neighbors who have resources, we create something bigger than any one of us could do alone. That’s the power of partnership. That’s the power of community.

Sometimes our plans feel small… and then God shows us something bigger. This week reminded us of that in the most beautiful ways.

We helped a friend recently released from jail start fresh with clothing for a new beginning. We supported a grandma with a microwave and clothing for her grandsons. So many moms visited for clothing, and several families received food to help them through the week. We even had a few college students stop by who needed clothing to keep moving forward.

Every one of these moments is a reminder that our wish is simply to help — and God’s plan is always greater than we imagine.

To everyone who supports this mission of providing low‑ or no‑cost food, clothing, and household essentials to families in need across Universal City and the surrounding areas… love y’all. You make these blessings possible.

💚 Never Underestimate the Power of Giving 💚

There’s a true story about a little girl named Emma that has stayed with me.

When Emma was just 5 years old, she learned that children in another part of the world were getting sick because they didn’t have access to clean water. She wanted to help provide a well, but the well cost $10,000.

Emma only had $20.

Instead of deciding that $20 wasn’t enough to make a difference, she started sharing the story and asking others to help. Over the next several years, hundreds of people joined her. Little by little, gift by gift, they eventually reached the $10,000 goal.

It’s a real story, and to me, the lesson is bigger than the well.

You don’t have to be able to do everything to do something. You just have to be willing to give what you can.

That’s what we believe at Thrifty Hippie Community Thrift Store. 🌻

This week, we were blessed to help some of our neighbors with work clothes, eyeglasses, food, and kids’ clothes.

None of those things may seem like a huge gift on their own. But when someone needs them, they can mean a whole lot.

A pair of work clothes might help someone walk into a job interview with a little more confidence.

Eyeglasses can help someone see clearly again.

Food can put a meal on a family’s table.

Kids’ clothes can help a parent stretch an already-tight budget a little further.

We’re just trying to give where we can and help make life a little easier.

And that’s the power of giving. One person gives what they can. Someone else gives what they can. Volunteers give their time. Someone donates things they no longer need. Someone shares a post. Someone walks through our doors because a neighbor told them about us.

And somehow, all those little acts of kindness become something much bigger. ❤️

We may not be able to solve every problem, but together, we can make a difference in someone’s day, someone’s week, or sometimes even someone’s life.

This week at the Hippie, we were reminded that everybody we come into contact with has a story whether it’s a donor, a shopper or someone in need.

One of our donors brought in a wedding dress. She wanted it to go to good use, but it was an emotional decision and she was in tears when she handed the dress to Melissa. We fell so blessed to have her trust.

We also partnered with SAMMinistries, supported a nursing home with much‑needed clothing, and worked alongside caseworkers to help clients facing real challenges. Every visit, every request, every need met is another reminder of why we’re here.

Whether it’s food, clothing, or essential household items, we do our best with what we have — and we’re grateful for the chance to serve Universal City and the surrounding area with compassion and dignity.
