There’s a provision being added to the 2026 Farm Bill tied to H.R. 5017 that’s raising concern in the hunting community.

Let me be clear:
👉 This bill is intended to address greyhound racing and animal welfare.
👉 The vast majority of us support ethical treatment of animals.

But here’s the issue…
The language in the bill is broad enough that it could impact how we train hunting dogs, specifically when it comes to using live birds or game in controlled, legal training environments.

For those of us who:
• Train bird dogs
• Run field trials
• Or rely on working dogs in the field

…you know that real-world exposure is essential. This isn’t about cruelty—it’s about properly training dogs to hunt safely and effectively.

Organizations like the American Kennel Club and Sportsmen’s Alliance are already raising concerns about how this could be interpreted if it becomes law.

A provision designed to ban greyhound racing would effectively outlaw certain kinds of hunting and make it illegal for bird dog trainers to use live pigeons, ducks, and game birds for training: https://trib.al/vmVQ1WH
