Even though I was born and raised in New York City, I’ve loved horses and ridden all my life. Not long after I graduated from college, my family moved to Dublin, Ireland, where, as usual, I spent as much time as I could around horses. I loved the colorful ribbon browbands that I saw on Irish horses and ponies at shows, events, and stable yards, but I never knew where to get them. So, back in the S

tates (now in the Virginia Hunt Country), I started making them for my own jumpers. Seeing them on my horses at shows, people often told me, “I’ve always loved those ribbon browbands! Where did you get them?” So, I started making them for other people’s horses. One Christmas I made matching belts for friends and soon after, I began getting requests from their friends. I couldn’t leave my dogs out, so I made collars and leashes for them too. There’s an old horseman’s proverb that goes some thing like, “Every rider gets one great horse.” If that’s the case, then smart, catlike Boy-O-Boy was my great horse. “Bob” is semi-retired now, but he’s still as ferocious a competitor with my daughter in the short-stirrup ring at the age of twenty as he was for me as a jumper at the age of six – or sixteen. Each of the main Boy-O-Boy Bridleworks weave patterns (like many of the color combinations) is named for the first horse to wear it. Boy-O-Boy was the first horse I made a ribbon browband for; because he started it all, I named the company after him.

Sampson, born in 1846 in Toddington Mills, Bedfordshire, was a Shire horse of truly legendary proportions. Measuring an astonishing 21.2½ hands high—approximately 86.5 inches or 220 centimeters—and weighing in at a staggering 3,360 pounds (1,524 kilograms), he remains the largest horse ever recorded. Bred during a time when draft horses were essential for heavy farm and industrial work, Sampson far exceeded even the expectations of his robust breed. His size was so extraordinary that he quickly drew attention from farmers, breeders, and curious onlookers alike.

Though his sheer mass was enough to make headlines, Sampson's temperament was just as noteworthy. Despite his giant frame, he was known for his gentle, easygoing nature, which made him a favorite among handlers and visitors. Unlike racehorses or cavalry mounts bred for speed and agility, Sampson was a working animal built for strength and endurance—though even among Shire horses, his capacity was unparalleled. He wasn’t just an impressive statistic; he was a living testament to the quiet strength and patience often found in the largest creatures.

Today, Sampson’s name endures in the annals of equine history as a symbol of natural wonder. He exemplified the extraordinary possibilities of selective breeding and the awe-inspiring range of the animal kingdom. For enthusiasts of horse history and the Shire breed, Sampson represents not only a remarkable physical achievement but also a reminder of the harmony that can exist between strength and gentleness—a legacy as towering as the horse himself.

City dog, barn dog, spokesmodel, contortionist, couch potato, BFF. 🐷💔

Fly high, sweet girl. I really hope we meet again. I couldn’t have asked for a better, funnier, more chauvenistically devoted friend for the past 14 years. Thank you. May there be lots of bacon and cheese and comfy pillows to greet you on the other side. I miss you already.
