Banned Books Week is here! From October 4–10 all banned and challenged books at The Book NexStore are 15% off!
But Banned Books Week is about a whole lot more than a display table and a sale. In 1982 book challenges were surging in schools, libraries, and bookstores across the country. That same year the Supreme Court ruled in Island Trees School District v. Pico that school officials could not remove books from school libraries simply because they disagreed with the ideas inside them. With censorship becoming a national conversation librarian and freedom of speech advocate Judith F. Krug joined booksellers, publishers, librarians, and other organizations to launch the very first Banned Books Week. More than 40 years later books are still challenged, books are still removed from shelves, and people are still trying to decide what other people should and shouldn’t be allowed to read.
Banned Books Week is a chance to talk about that history pay attention to what’s happening now and most importantly celebrate the freedom to read!
