Valley Park Elevator & Hardware

Valley Park Elevator & Hardware A St. Louis landmark supplying customers friendly service since 1874. The store combines the essentials of "Big Box" hardware stores, with personalized service
(1)

The original Elevator was built in 1874, but was damaged in a fire. This was common for grain elevators at the time, due to combustion from dust and grains. It was rebuilt in 1887 by Mr. Timmerman, a wealthy businessman and land prospector. After completion of the building, he then sold the Elevator to a "Farmers CO-OP" with a group of 20 or so shareholders. Bill Osdieck was the store manager alon

g with Louie Pedretti for years. In 1976 after years of laying brick, being a police officer, and a municipal judge in Valley Park, Richard "JUDGE" Grellner decided to go into business for his family. Judge ran the store for years before his two sons Steven and Jeffrey took over the family business. Sadly, Jeff passed away on February 8, 2008, and Judge followed on March 23, 2008. We miss them dearly but still feel their presence working right along with us at The Elevator. The store is currently run by Steve Grellner, and his nephew Christopher. We are very much keeping the family tradition alive......

Holy Heat Batman! 🥵 The past 2 days have been brutal outside and the staff has officially lost it. Justin wanted to do the ‘Tarps Off’ trend, but the guys said - ABSOLUTELY NOT! So instead of abs, he’s revealing bags of mulch.

Speaking of mulch..We’ve got almost every color available. Need landscape rock? We’ve got that too. Need to see a guy in an elevator shirt look like he’s about to faint? Come by the Elevator. 🫠

🕖 We are here until 7pm tonight!

Stop Waiting for the Perfect Red! 🍅
Why You Should Pick Your Tomatoes Early

Are you staring at your garden, waiting for that “perfect” deep red tomato? You might be waiting longer than you need to!
Many gardeners don’t realize that once a tomato hits the “breaker stage”—that moment it starts showing a hint of pink, orange, or yellow—it has already reached its full flavor potential. Here is why you should consider bringing them inside a little early:

🐿️Beat the Pests: Squirrels, birds, and insects love a perfectly ripe tomato just as much as you do. Picking them as they start to turn keeps your harvest safe from hungry garden visitors.

🌧️Avoid Splitting: Heavy rain or sudden temperature changes can cause fully ripe tomatoes to crack or split. Harvesting early lets you control the ripening process in your kitchen.

⚡️Save the Plant Energy: By picking early, you allow the plant to focus its energy on ripening the next batch of fruit rather than maintaining the ones already on the vine.

How to do it: Once you see that first blush of color, gently twist the tomato off the vine. Place them on your kitchen counter out of direct sunlight. They will finish ripening beautifully in a few days, tasting just as sweet and juicy as if they’d stayed on the vine.
