When Julie described the direction she wanted for J.Blu’s new website, she kept coming back to words like classic, heirloom and Ralph Lauren: timeless and polished but still warm with personality.

That became the starting point for this custom Showit site. We paired classic typography with layers of navy, cream and soft blue, subtle texture and, of course, plenty of J.Blu’s beautiful floral work.

The result feels distinctly J.Blu: refined without being too formal, romantic without feeling overly feminine and designed to let the work speak for itself.

This is one of my favorite custom website designs to date, and such a fun one to add to the Avenue Bee portfolio. The new jbludesign.com is officially live 🤍

✨ Starling is officially here! ✨

I’ve been working behind the scenes on a new way to work with Avenue Bee, and my first Wix Studio website template is now live.

Starling is editorial-style, image-forward and built for creative service businesses with beautiful work to share. You’ll start with the design already in place, then customize the colors, fonts, imagery and copy to make it feel like your own.

I created the Avenue Bee Template Shop for business owners who value good design but may not be ready for the investment of a fully-custom website. It’s a way to start with an Avenue Bee-designed foundation at an accessible price point.

Starling is available now for $479. Head to my website to explore the live demo and shop the template: https://avenuebeestudio.com/starling

Long Lake Memories has officially been in business for a full year, which meant it was time to take another look at the website.

We now have a much clearer picture of who’s booking, what brings them to the property and what questions they have before their stay. Add in renovations, new amenities and a growing library of local content, and there was plenty to update.

For this refresh, I reworked the messaging, added more lifestyle imagery, built out FAQs based on real guest questions, reorganized content and added new blog posts to support local SEO.

I’ve been working on something new behind the scenes, and I’m excited to finally start sharing it.

This September, I’ll be launching the Avenue Bee Template Shop, beginning with Starling: a premium Wix Studio website template designed for portfolio-driven creative businesses.

One thing that was important to me while designing Starling was flexibility. The same design system can take on a completely different personality with new photography, branding and messaging, so you can make it your own without starting from scratch.

More than just a homepage, Starling is a complete website system with strategically-designed pages, CMS functionality, resources and guides to help make launching your website a little easier.

I’ll be sharing more over the next few weeks, including what’s included, pricing and customization options. My goal is to launch on September 1, and I can’t wait to show you more!

Earlier this summer, I earned Wix Studio Web Design Expert certification, and this little plaque arrived in the mail today.

Running a small design business means most wins are pretty quiet, so this was a fun one to find in the mailbox.

It’s also a nice reminder that I get to do work I genuinely enjoy.

Now back to what I was doing before the mail arrived 🖥️ 😊

Not every website project starts with a complete rebrand.

For Michelle, the goal was to take what already existed and create a more polished, professional online presence around it.

We refined the visual direction, simplified the experience and focused on the details that shape first impressions.

A lot of conversations about SEO focus on algorithms, rankings and technical updates.

But is that how people are actually searching?

Searches are becoming more specific. People are looking for services in particular cities, niches and industries. Google AI Overviews are changing how information is presented, and tools like ChatGPT are becoming part of the research process.

The common thread through all of it? Clarity.

The businesses that clearly communicate what they do, who they help and why they’re qualified to help tend to be in a stronger position than those relying on broad, generic content.

That’s why many of the SEO recommendations I make today have less to do with chasing trends and more to do with strengthening the foundation of a website:

• Detailed service pages
• Helpful FAQs
• Location-specific content
• Portfolio projects and case studies
• Blog posts that answer real client questions

The way people search will always continue to evolve, and the businesses that adapt alongside it will be the ones people continue to find.

Not every website should be built the same way.

For some businesses, the strongest selling tool isn’t a paragraph of copy. It’s the work itself.

Florists, photographers, designers, planners and other image-forward businesses often earn trust through what people see before they ever read a word.

That doesn’t mean strategy becomes less important, but it does mean that the strategy should support the way people naturally make decisions.

When I redesigned the Bonnie Bee Flowers website, the goal wasn’t to add more content. It was to create an experience that gave the imagery room to lead while still providing the information couples needed to take the next step.

When I started my business, I assumed growth meant saying yes to more opportunities, offering more services and filling every available spot on my calendar.

What I've learned is that more isn't always better. So, I'm much more intentional about who I work with, the projects I take on and how I spend my time. I've realized I do my best work when I'm not stretched thin, and I enjoy my life a lot more when work isn't at the center of everything.

I still care about growing my business, but I just don't think growth has to come at the expense of creativity, family, travel or the things that make life feel full.

Maybe that's what this season is really about: getting clearer on what matters and letting go of the idea that more is always the goal.

One thing I kept thinking while exploring Mackinac Island:

The places we remember most usually aren’t the places with the biggest attractions or the most things to do. They’re the places that just feel good to be in.

As a designer, I notice things like architecture, signage, landscaping, colors and interiors. But most people aren’t walking around analyzing those things; they just notice how a place feels.

And I think that’s because memorable experiences are rarely created by one thing. They’re created by a lot of small details working together.

The strongest brands tend to work the same way. It’s usually not one logo, one font or one website feature that makes them memorable. It’s the way everything works together to create a consistent experience.

Maybe that’s why some places stay with us long after we’ve left.
