Kandelumo offers harmonious handmade soy candles. All of our operations are guided by our passion for sustainability and lower waste.

What we care about most is not candles, not scents. We want to give people a sense of peace, to transport them to a comfortable place and time, to make them happy. Joyful people can do wonders in the world. Kandelumo, from the Esperanto word for “candlelight,” is inspired by that same language, which was invented in the late 1800s to act as a neutral language, one not bound to any particular natio

n. The sense of peace the language evokes and the idealism behind its origin align neatly with our goals for a more sustainable small candle company. (Environmental challenges are global, after all.) Kaj jes, ni parolas kaj skribas la esperantan, iomete. We are a young, tiny company; all candles are homemade and hand-poured. We pledge to continue learning and improving, to work relentlessly toward less environmental impact, to be transparent with our customers, and to do more good than harm.

It was 2019 when I (Melody, owner) first started toying with the idea of making candles, and in 2020 I lost one of my favorite in-person hobbies (Zumba with Melody) and found myself with enough time to work not only on perfecting my candles but also on setting up a business to sell my wares. Since then I’ve put great care into every detail—and most importantly, I’ve remained laser-focused on what mattered the most to me in doing business, even above creating a great candle and at the expense of greater profits: my ethical and sustainability commitments.

In recent weeks, it’s become clear to me that although Kandelumo can financially support itself, I can no longer maintain the juggling act of life priorities. And I realized suddenly that the business has fulfilled what I needed it to. I have other creative outlets, opportunities for socialization outside of market events, engaging and rewarding mental challenges, and ways to spread joy. I’m so grateful to have found myself in the position of *too much.*

And I’m grateful to those of you who’ve supported Kandelumo, by buying candles or spreading the word or simply liking a social post. Thank you, thank you.

This is the chilly face of someone wearing a turtleneck, three jackets, a coat, long underwear, fleece leggings, jeans, and two pairs of socks. Happily, the is more than worth the effort! One more week for me (12/10) and then I can spend Saturdays warm again. :)
