Anemones bring a splash of color to the late summer/fall garden and are particularly welcome in shady areas, as other perennials are fading.

The fall-blooming anemones are also known as “windflowers” because the flowers are held on wiry stems that sway in the breeze. The hybrid varieties are diverse, with colors ranging from white to pinks and purples. Flowers can be single or double. Some varieties grow 4-5 feet in height, such as the popular white ‘Honorine Joubert’ and the pink ‘September Charm’. Shorter varieties only get about 1-2 feet and include such selections as ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Satin Doll’.

In addition to their beauty in the garden, the blooms are long-lasting, with plants blooming up to two months.

The roots of anemone are rhizomatous, so plants will spread. Fortunately,, the roots are very shallow and easy to pull. The smaller type varieties have more of a clumping habit, and not as vigorous.

Fall-blooming anemones perform best in well-drained, moist soils in light or partial shade. Sunnier locations are fine as long as the plants are getting enough moisture.

These perennials work well in a woodland-type garden, in semi-shady borders, and as understory plants underneath trees and shrubs.

With summer coming to a close, many plants are near the end of their blooming cycle, but Caryopteris is just getting its start. This small shrub—or, as some may argue, perennial, due to its growing habit—is extremely easy to grow and is both drought-tolerant and deer-resistant. Native to East Asia, it is commonly known as “Bluebeard” or “Blue Mist”. Small, aromatic gray-green leaves cover a somewhat nondescript plant although some varieties sport chartreuse leaves making them quite attractive when they are not in flower. The real bonanza comes in late summer (late August to early September) when suddenly one wakes up to find the shrub covered in fuzzy, true-blue flowers, buzzing with bees.

Grow Caryopteris in full sun or partial shade. These are undemanding plants and need only some sun and good drainage to flourish. They can often die completely to the ground in winter but will recover in the spring. It is best to cut it back in early spring to maintain an attractive shape. New plants can be added to the garden now through the fall. Provide them with a good layer of mulch for the winter months.

When one thinks of a narrow, columnar tree, a sugar maple is probably the last species that comes to mind. Sugar maples are typically among our largest trees, and a mature specimen is an unforgettable sight—especially in autumn, when the foliage erupts into fiery color.

The ‘Apollo’ Sugar Maple is a true columnar selection, maintaining a tight, upright silhouette throughout its life. Its branches ascend at steep angles, creating a dense, rocket‑like form that rarely needs corrective pruning. Unlike many columnar trees that become sparse with age, ‘Apollo’ retains a full, compact crown even as it mature.
