TIMBRE 201 | Goddesses, Monsters, & Mortals: Rewriting the Myths We Inherited

Every myth we were handed in school came from the same vantage point: men writing about men, for men, about the shaping of the “heroes”: Odysseus, Theseus, Agamemnon, Hercules, and so on. And yet these heroes used, abused, and discarded women in order to achieve their goals. Nine times out of ten, they would be nothing without the goddesses who guided them, the “monsters” they slayed, or the women by their sides.

We’ll discuss who is remembered as divine, who is condemned as monstrous, who is praised as a hero and what changes when the silenced finally get the mic.

TIMBRE 101 | From Page to Screen: Books, Movies, & the Art of Adaptation

What is lost when a story leaves the page? What is gained? And most importantly… was the book actually better?

Across several books, heading soon from page to screen, we’ll explore how beloved characters, imagined worlds, and carefully constructed stories are translated into film. Along the way, we’ll ask what makes an adaptation “faithful,” whether it even needs to be, and why the version we directed in our heads is sometimes impossible to beat.

This semester, we’re traveling from classic Regency romance and modern love stories to brutal dystopian futures, lush fantastical worlds, haunting mysteries, and all the way to the far reaches of space. If you’re looking for a class that doubles as a great adventure, this one is perfect for you.
