Zoe is at market now a days with her Papa selling and telling stories…a nice upgrade in job from unwilling flower holder. The Dane County Farmers' Market market is its own culture…the regulars, the vendors, the neighborhood…Hans considered himself a market historian at this point as he’s never known life without being there. Zoe now gets to share in the stories and conversations , it’s pretty great.

Once upon a time you could simply instagram how ever the heck you wanted to now it’s tending sounds and reels and tik toks just to get seen as a business. We are a tiny business not one with a social media creator. Props to all farmers who make content even though they have a thousand projects on fire. Hans will not be doing that..but maybe Zoe needs another promotion!

Market milestone for us today….we didn’t need a sitter in order to both be there without children 🤣 I can’t remember a time I got to go with Hans to market without children in tow. For most of my career I had three young kids to take with me if I wanted to join Hans….while it is super important to raise them in that space, knowing good food and hard work…It doesn’t lack kids running into the crowd (or the street!), fighting with each other, getting bored and wanting to leave, basically high stress when it should be the more relaxing day of the week. All the other days are physically hard and sweaty and full of a big time crunch. Markets are supposed to be a chill time to connect with our customers. This seasons a wild card for wedding vendors so I’m embracing my availability to lean into weekends. My oldest Zoe, has been going to market with Hans but I had yet to take advantage of the fact she can watch our boys instead. For any entrepreneurial moms out there with young kids…it gets easier. Not only did she rock at keeping them entertained, I came home to a clean house! What the what! farming is grueling work and making money selling flowers is difficult no matter how you do it. Giving up every weekend of your summer out of necessity isn’t glamorous. Kids get the short end of the stick very often. So for us today it’s like a whole new world…. and for my kids just getting to chill at home is all they ever wanted.

51 years at this market. Hans grew up going with his Mom. That’s a lot of Saturdays for him 🩷
