Lengths and heights can vary with both styles, but knowing the fundamentals of each can make a big difference in getting the cut and look you want.

So, take this trip with me as we break down what separates a taper from a fade, how each one changes the overall look of your haircut, and what you should consider when choosing between the two.

The goal is simple: to help you walk into the shop knowing what you want, communicate it clearly to your barber, and feel more confident when you sit in the chair.

TAPER vs. FADE — What’s the Difference?

They might look similar at first glance, but a taper and a fade create two distinctly different finishes. Here’s how to know which one might be right for you.

THE TAPER
A taper gradually shortens the hair as it moves down the sides and toward the neckline. The transition is subtle, and there’s usually more length left around the sides and back.

A taper is a great choice if you want:
• A classic, natural-looking cut
• A softer transition between lengths
• More hair left on the sides and back

THE FADE
